should we be concerned about the upcoming 3 stooges movie? |
|
the farrely brothers, who brought us 'something about mary' and other comedies, are planning a large scale production of a move starring the 3 stooges. apparently set in modern times, the 3 morons will do the usual schtick, but without the restrictions of the 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's censorship standards. same eye pokes and wood rasps to the forehead, but also dirty jokes, sexual innuendo, and comic violence.
word has it that they are approaching russel crow to play mo. i can see that i guess. i would strongly suggest john lovitz as larry. can't really think of a curly off the top of my head.
but anyway, this is entering into dangerous and sacred territory in my opinion, and we as a nation should be concerned about any movie utilizing 3 of my favorite heroes and icons. these 3 men gave much to our nation's culture and should not be lowered to the level of cheap commercialism and ridicule. moe, larry, and above all curly are surely hilarious, but as american institutions, they are nothing to be laughed at. neither is shemp.
just one patriots opinion about a very grave situation facing our nation.
i thank you for your indulgence, and i will bother you no more.

2. We can but hope that suitable reverence will be applied..... |

And the end product is worthy of the great original.
True Stooges' aficionados must be alert for any departure from canon.

It's sort of the same when they try to do Chaplin, Keaton, or others of that caliber.

7. they shouldn't use foul language or sex |

IF they do a movie about this, a subplot should be how Shemp goes rogue and wants to take over the world and that the stooges have to stop him.
Everyone always hated Shemp anyway.

8. That would be horrible... |

Are the Farrely brothers out of original ideas already?
There's just no way to transplant the Stooges to a 21st Century audience without completely bastardizing their "old world" charm. I would wager that even Curly would be embarrassed at some of the crap that passes for comedy these days... including some stuff by the Farrelys.
DON'T DO IT!!

3 Stooges with Farrelly gross-outs. Great fucking idea... “You took the turd out, yeah?” he said, recalling a gag from an early draft.
“What turd out?” Peter replied, distractedly.
“You remember the turd.”
“Oh, yeah, it lands in a woman’s mouth, and Larry says, ‘Hey! What’s the big idea? No smoking!’’’
...
Peter told me that there were loud disagreements about a scene at the end of the script involving balloons: “The image of them farting into a balloon—that cracked me up. Bobby was saying, ‘I think this is beneath us.’ I didn’t. I think he was just burned out on slapstick.”
...
Cerrone, who is a talented Stooges mimic, a sometime actor in Farrelly films, and a possible Curly in the movie, demonstrated Moe grabbing at Larry’s hair, then trying to do the same with Curly, who has none. He had Moe looking at his empty hand.
“You know, you could do one where he puts his hand down Curly’s pants,” Peter said. He stood up, and mimed Moe grabbing some pubic hair inside Curly’s pants, and then, with a crunching sound, pulling it up: “Yeaww!”
They laughed at this perfect synthesis of Farrelly and Stooge.
“Yeaooooow!” Bobby said, holding an imaginary fistful of hair. “You could have a bird flying out of it . . . ”
“Yes, it’s a little nest with birds in it,” said Cerrone, fluttering his wings.
“Yeah, there you go!” Peter said, in the tone of a man who has done a good day’s work. “There you go.”
No, dear God, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
