Homeless Man Dines On Filet Mignon - Tells Waitress He Is Broke (Arrested)
<snip>

Brian Patrick Cahill ate like a king.

Filet mignon. Shrimp scampi. A bunch of beers and some Seagram's VO at the Fireside Restaurant in Denville on Wednesday night.

Then he got the bill, $88.95, and broke the bad news to the waitress: He's homeless and has no money, authorities said yesterday.

The police were called. The 41-year-old man was arrested on the spot, charged with theft by deception and sent to the Morris County Jail in lieu of $1,500 bail.

"He had a good meal and plenty to drink," Lt. Randy Weick said. "But he knew he couldn't pay for it."

1. He should have watched "Victor/Victoria"
and put a cockroach in his salad.

2. And now he's going to get 3 squares a day from the taxpayers
I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

I always said if I have a serious illness or need a transplant and my HMO wouldn't pay for it, I'd commit a serious crime and have it taken care of courtesy of the taxpayers.

5. won't work
It has been well documented over and over that women prisoners often can't even get treatment for serious illnesses like breast cancer. A transplant? Dream on. I have heard stories of male prisoners getting transplants a time or two but I would need to see proof that this is more than urban legend. Medical care for prisoners is close to non-existent in many prisons.

3. I guess I'm a cynic

because I don't believe a word of this from the owner:

"If he would have come in like a gentleman and said he was homeless and hungry, I would have been more than happy to feed him and probably give him some money," Gizas said.

Right. I'm sure every homeless person who asks is treated to a free meal at your restaurant. :eyes:

As for Cahill:

Cahill said he has a drinking problem and needs to give the idea of getting help and turning his life around serious thought.

Bottom line: "The police are right. Theft of services is considered a crime," he said. "Crime doesn't pay. You wind up going to jail."

Sounds like someone who knows how to do a cost-benefit analysis.

8. I know someone who owns a restaurant who did that ...
a man came to his place and told him he hadn't eaten in days and begged for food. He had him come in and told him to order anything he wanted. The man ate and told him he would come back to repay. My friend said it's OK, don't worry about it, just get yourself together.

5 months later, the man came back. He got a job and a place to stay and he paid for the meal.

He really felt good helping him and he was touched that the man would do that.

9. No...I'm sure you are not a cynic. If this were true, the man would
not be in jail.

11. Now
Before you judge the owner, the man ate almost $90.00 worth.
The owner may have been thinking of a less posh meal.

I've worked in small family run restaurants(No I don't know if this is one) and the profit margin can be pretty close on some.

Just a thought.
