Hi, I'm a Yankees fan AND a proud Democrat!
I've been getting a little sick and tired with all the accusations hurled around here as of late that somehow all Yankees fans are freepers/repthuglicans. Simply stated, this is not true. I'm sure some like to poke fun at the so-called Evil Empire--and the way my team has been playing lately, I can't blame them. But to accuse your fellow DUers of being the most vile of the vile--freepers--is just plain wrong, joke or no joke. So make fun of the Yanks all you want (they deserve it right now), but lay off us proud Democratic Yankees fans!

1. Hey, manco
I doubt anyone seriously thinks all Yankees fans are repugs. It's just that there are a LOT of Red Sox fans here. And we're PROUD Sox fans.

Don't let a little friendly trash talk get you down.

3. I know that, but...
I wanted to address it anyway. It really is quite jarring to be called a freeper, trash talk or no. I'm sure you understand...

4. Not exactly
There was a thread started here yesterday that clearly stated that all Yankee fans are freepers.

Yeah, I know we are hated around here but that's going just a tad too far.
Totally ridiculous, actually.

8. Well, on behalf of all Sox fans...
I didn't see it, so I won't comment on yesterday's thread. For me personally, I have no problem accepting that one (Yankees fan) does not necessarily equate to the other (repug).

The Yankees still suck, though. Go Sox!!!

And I know all yankees fans aren't Republicans. It's just that most Yankees fans ACT like Republicans.

Who don't like to be reminded of the fact that the Yawkey family were the last baseball owners to integrate their franchise.

10. As a non-recovering Red Sox fan, I can tell you that I would never make
that association. Silly and rather counte-productive, politics-wise. I'm curious, since I didn't see this thread, was this a long time poster or someone with a dozen posts?

17. I think it's that whole George Steinbrenner thing...
...that causes it. George and the Yankees, are, in a way a lot like the republican party, as in they have tons of money to spend, and spend it they do, with a vengeance, anything, ANYTHING to win. I know a lot of baseball fans that like the yanks, but hate the S.

By the way, going to the game here at the new park here in San Diego tonight. Man it is a beautiful spot.

I saw the pods playing there on ESPN a couple of weeks back.

Looks like a beautiful ballpark.

Is it taxpayer financed?

19. Sorta...
It's partly financed by the taxpayers, and partly paid for by people who are developing the area around it. The whole issue is confusing, as they had mega lawsuits that delayed everything shortly after they broke ground, that delayed everything for years.

22. I may hate the Yankees
but I'd never assume all their fans are freeps! New York votes too consistently Dem for me to assume that!

Now, if you'd just switch your allegiance to the Mets, we could talk baseball as well as politics. ;-)

23. It Was Me - I'm guilty as charged and I would like to apologize
My calling all Yankee fans **** was I admit a childish and southie thing to do. Please accept my sincere apology to all DU Yankee Fans including even that *_* guy. If I hurt anyone with this lowest of curses, I am truly sorry.

I grew up a Yankee fan and I know that many many good Democrats are Yankee fans. Some of my best friends are still Yankee fans.

Maybe others will learn from this and lighten up with the 1918 taunts that have really gotten old.

P.S. The Red Sox Really Did Sweep the Yankees!

30. And Yankee fans never pour beer on Red Sox fans at Yankee Stadium
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 04:34 PM by RationalRose
SiobhanClancy has a real good story about that, and I have one also. It goes both ways, pal.

BTW I have Sox seasons tickets and most fans who exhibit really bad behavior get booted out. I have noticed that Yankee security is pretty strict that was also.

34. And let's talk about the Yankees fans throwing batteries
at opposing players.

I like going to Yankee stadium, but there are some real crazies in the cheap seats, much like the Bleacher Creatures at Fenway.

You can hate the Red Sox all you want, but don't paint all fans with such a broad brush. There are tons of Sox fans on DU.

looks like it will be your pitching staff "eating it" this year. Poor Steinbrenner and his $190 million payroll!

Most of us Red Sox fans would never assume Yankee fans are freeps. NYC is a very Democratic city. I think the person who made such statements has apologized on this thread.

36. On this date in Yankees history . . .
Roger Maris hit his first home run of the 1961 season on April 26, 1961, off of Detroit Tigers' starter Paul Foytack, in the New York Yankees' 11th game of the season.

I've been a Yankees fan since the days of the "M & M Boys" (yeah, I'm THAT old, LOL). When we lived in South Central PA, people would ask me, "How did a nice Southern girl like you come to root for the New York Yankees?" -- to which I would reply, "Mantle and Maris". (And I've got the DVD of the movie "61*", so I can relive that season over again. Thanks, Billy Crystal!)

I'm also marking my 30th year as a proud Democrat. Don't know how the rumor got started that Yankees fans are Freepers (Good Lord), but I'm living proof to the contrary.

Enough said.

(No huckleberries from BoSox fans, please. ;-)
