Man feared drowned after Wisconsin belly flop contest
Associated Press
April 26, 2004FLOP27

BELOIT, Wis. -- A belly flop contest in the Rock River turned tragic, with one contestant missing and feared drowned.

Three men jumped about 20 feet from a bridge into the cold water Saturday, when the 52-year-old man jumped.

``He came up more than three times,'' said William Gifford, who was waiting for his turn in the contest. ``Then he went under and they couldn't find him.''

Gifford, of Janesville, said the contest was supposed to take place at the dock behind Diamond Jim's, the bar that sponsored the contest, but the other men decided to jump from the bridge.

Tom Gehl, patrol commander for the Rock County Sheriff's Department, identified the missing man as Dorl W. Gates of Beloit.

Efforts to find him Saturday and Sunday were unsuccessful, and Gehl said the full-fledged search had been suspended.

Edward Quaerna, of Janesville, said he did not understand why his friend jumped from the bridge.

``He doesn't know how to swim,'' Quaerna said.

1. And MN doesn't have it's share of drunk Darwin Awards?
Although usually I read about knuckleheads like this in some southern state, especially Alabama, Texas or Florida.

7. Every state (and country) does.
Darwin Award candidates' last words, many times:

5. Oh come on. We're just an intensely curious people up here
Since he hadn't ever tried to swim before, how could he know whether or not he could bellyflop off a bridge until he tried it once?

Guess it turns out he couldn't, huh?
