6. Fermi's paradox
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 11:35 PM by jpgray
Given the near infinite size of the universe, and given that intelligent species wish to explore and expand, the fact that we haven't encountered something is totally outside of probability. Because if we exist, probability states that other intelligent species have existed elsewhere. Perhaps intelligent species don't last long enough to get the word out anywhere--after all, the hundred years we've been using radio signals is a meager blip in the cosmic time-frame. If we were to die out in a few decades, then it's pretty reasonable to assume that others have gone through the same cycle while still satisfying Fermi's paradox.

Cheerful stuff. :D

9. How about human bodies are just sacks of chemicals and water?
that dry up when you die. That's it. No afterlife. That always cheers me up.

20. That episode would be "Home Soil"
At the Federation's request, a U.S.S. Enterprise away team visits Velara III where a group of terraformers are working to transform the seemingly desolate planet into one capable of supporting life.
Tragically, a terraformer engineer is killed during their visit in a bizarre hydraulic room accident.
While investigating the mishap, Data is inexplicably attacked by the laser drilling system. He escapes injury, but upon further exploration, Data and La Forge find a microscopic inorganic life form that seems to be trying to communicate with them. They take the life form, or "microbrain" as they refer to it, back to the U.S.S. Enterprisewhere it begins to reproduce and project an energy force that compels Dr. Crusher to activate a quarantine seal around the medical lab.
Soon, the crew learns from the microbrain that some of its members were killed during the terraformer's drilling on the planet's surface, and that its attempts to contact the humans were ignored. As a result, they murdered the engineer in the hydraulic room and have declared war on the human race.
To save the U.S.S. Enterprise, Picard attempts to beam the life form back to Velara III . But the microbrain's power is too strong. Just when its energy projections threaten to destroy the ship, the crew discovers that the microbrain feeds off light. By shutting off the lights in the lab, they force the microbrain to surrender and are able to beam it back home.

15. Hey do you read any Star Trek Books?
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 12:47 AM by Solon
I have a series of them called the Q Continumm, which covers Q's childhood about 4 billion years ago to Picard's time. Pretty cool, and funny, explains why the Calamarian were pissed at him in the TV Series, and also explains how the dinosaurs were wiped out. Also includes quite a few other incorpreal species and beings that crop up in the Star Trek Universe. Including "The ONE", the head from "The Final Frontier", he invented monotheism, at least according to Q.

ON EDIT: yes I am a hardcore trekkie :)

17. despite my hard core trekkerness...
I dont read the books, I consider them 'fiction' from the real Star Trek timeline (only what happens on screen IS star trek)... I do read the tech manuals, nitpick guides, encyclopedias and whatnot though.

But, if enterprise doesnt get much better, I just might try reading some.

11. Any answer would have to be speculation.
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 12:22 AM by Delano
Even if some all-powerful being were to come up to us and say "THIS is how the universe began", it would still not logically explain what brought the being itself into existence, or what there was before the creation of the universe (of course there always was and always will be a universe, even if it had nothing IN it. Space and time are both infinite, and infinity is one thing I believe humans will never really quite comprehend, even if we do come up with some formula to explain it) Out urge to understand out origins and our reasons for being is only natural, but I think looking to those we love for a reason is wiser than looking for some mythical all-powerful creator. Other animals are quite content not intellectually knowing the meaning of life. They instinctually know the most important thing - the meaning of life is TO LIVE.

19. If you need to conceptualize infinity, just
think of Bill Gates' wallet or George Bush's penchant for complete confusion.

21. I voted 'other'...
I believe that aliens had left a coke bottle sitting out in the sun cause a little coke left in the bottle to ferment in simple cell creatures.
