I have a WI-FI question for anyone who can help.... |
|
I popped a wi-fi card into my laptop in order to access my friend's wireless network. I being asked for a W.E.P. (Wired Equivalent Privacy) number. How do I find it out? My friend is not sure. They have a G4 MAC and use a "Linksys" cable connection with an Airport. They also have no idea what their WEP # is.

1. I think it's a password it is looking for |
|
not a number.
If your friend set up the Airport with WEP turned on, he had to enter a password during the configuration setup.
WEP is good to turn on, BTW. It can be hacked, but only by someone persistent enough to dump enough weak packets to decrypt.

2. 2 possibilities come to mind |
|
1) Your friend doesn't have encryption on and you need to dig up where the 'connect even if unsecure' option is *or words to that effect*
2) Your friend does have encryption on, and you need to dig up the manuals for the linksys and airport devices, and read them. There you will figure out how to not only find out the encryption key, but how to change it should the need arise.

7. your friend needs to configure the router to accept your transmissions |
|
the router will then give him the correct key, or he can set it himself. It will be matched to your MAC address.

in configured on the Airport, accesed usually by an IP address and password. The laptop will have to have the same encryption set.
