Pet Owners! Who's ALPHA in your house? |
|
In my house I'm alpha. The dogs hover around me. The cats come to me or fear me depending on my mood.
Paul would be Omega. NO ONE in the house listens to him. If he takes the Grrrl's outside he usually has to get me to call them in because they won't listen.
Misty, my puppy, will walk with us to the corner and sit there. She won't go unless I say it's OK. Paul can call her but she won't move until I tell her "Come".
What about your family? Who's top dog? (Or cat.)

But my boxer and I had some serious battles of the will before he acquiesced. I'm stubborn, and I have a dog that a trainer once told me "was the most stubborn dog she had ever seen in 17 years." The wife is probably at the bottom of the list, the poor thing.

...I have a german shepard and a king charles spaniel type dog. Of course the small dog takes her lead from the big dog but from time to time is insistant that the big dog settle down. Anyway the dogs respond to both my wife and I most of the time. I can put a plate of food down and be assured the shepard is convinced I am not coming back for it before he will make a play for it while if my wife puts a plate down it is gone. Interestingly the shepard is very protective of my wife and even convinced me to stop throwing snowballs once in his unique german shepard sort of way, while he will stand behind me and show no aggression whatsoever when if my wife was there he would have been in attack mode. We have actually experimented with this. Perhaps a DUer smarter than I would like to comment on who is alpha and omega here.

He started out being the more timid cat. Now he does what he wants and gets away with it. Ricco is more laid back.

9. My husband, no question |
|
I come next, although my big boy Cappy will sometimes try to test me. My girl Yankee comes after that, then my husband's sons, then poor Fire. Every once in awhile, Fire cavils at his omega status and starts pestering Yankee until she screams horrible epithets at him and runs behind a chair to pick her butt bald in agitation.

11. Usually me. Sometimes Elvis forgets that. |

I have to wrestle him to the ground, put the headlock on him, and bite his ear. That'll put him in his place for a while.

I think that I am, but I'm not 100% sure, especially with Brody (the puppy).Sometimes Brody gives me a 'my human (Tony) didn't say so, so I don't have to do what you told me' look, which is when I have to adopt my 'I mean business' tone of voice, and he relents. If Tony's not around, however, Brody is quite obedient.
Must be the Dobie in him...

He rules with an iron claw.
His partner, the sweet, delicate little Willow, is smarter. What I think of as a passive leader. She doesn't bully anyone, is quiet and unnoticeable, but always there. And she is way smarter than Lucy. When he turns prey loose in the house, and furiously tears the place apart trying to find it, she quietly observes; when he gives up in a huff she knows right where the prey has gone to ground, and knows how to patiently, and invisibly, wait for it to show itself. She gets it every time.
My beautiful dog is loving, playful, sweet, and subservient to all, including the cats and the hens.
But who decideds who gets the chair, the bed, my lap? Lucy. He rules the space.

I'm the beta, which is perfectly fine with me; I have no problem not being the 'heavy' when I'm at home. :)
