For a weekend together:

Hotel room (2 nights): $140 - $160, and that's at the cheaper places like Econo-Lodge.
Gas: $1.80 - $2.00 a gallon x the 550 miles between me and Lisa.
Food: $5 - $10 a meal per person x 12 meals.

Certainly, the $200 that our fellow DUers have pledged to me and Lisa will help immensely in making our first meeting a reality, but if you think it's more than enough, then you obviously haven't footed the bill for a road trip!

Since ~one~ of you is going to cash all the amazon donations, why doesn't ~that~ person travel the entire distance and eliminate the need for hotels. If you both still live with your parents, go have sex in the woods. Otherwise, wire the money to LH and have her drive the distance, yeah it's far but it is ~true love~ and all that right?

and fairly assuming that neither of you has a high performance car that requires premium gasoline, but a car that does get 25 mpg highway *locking you in at 1 generous 1.80 per gallon - 1100 miles, $79.80* that's just a hair under 80 dollars, giving you the 12 x 10 meal requirement, totalling *ding!* $200.

That being said, if you meet at another's place, you won't have to go out and eat all the time and you can save all sorts of money by cooking your own meals, which can be quite fun in and of itself *wink wink nudge nudge say no more*.

I was away for the weekend and only this morning discovered what a vitriol-filled flamefest that other thread had become. Since I couldn't respond there, let me just say that my post was merely a good-karma suggestion, and nothing more. If I had intended it to mean more, I would have enumerated it in detail in my response--if you're familiar with my posts at all, you know I'm not shy about getting right to the point on my opinion.

In my absence, I was told "fuck you," among other lovely suggestions about what I could do with my person. I had outrageously awful motives ascribed to me that have no connection with reality. Please do everyone a favor and don't jump to conclusions, grossly overreact, or make assumptions about why somebody has said something--why didn't you or LH just ask what my motives were instead of assuming I was trashing you?

The things that were said were WAY too harsh, I didn't deserve that and I don't appreciate it. I'm certainly thick-skinned enough to shrug off the nastiness, but it has changed my opinion of a few folks somewhat. Pretty ridiculous, but educational.

has certainly changed as well; a couple of whom I supported in their own situations, then they turn around and stick a knife in mine.As another poster on that thread said, it was totally unneccesary to bring Dean and I in on the thread at all; people could have started their own fund for AlienGirl, or anyone else in need, there was nothing stopping them. It was mean-spirited, cynical, accusatory, and totally unneccesary.

You agreed with the posters who were saying things like "if DU can cough up some bucks for a paid to boink" and "Skinner should be as concerned for DUers like her as he is for people's sex lives", and said that "better yet, NightTrain and LH could donate their fund to her." I really don't see how it was possible to misunderstand the motivation.

And for the record, we really would have seriously considered it, especially since there are a few other DUers in need as well, (I've been laid off and don't yet have another job and don't have health insurance, but at least my son and I live with my parents which is a better situation than some others) if not for the WAY it was brought up. It's not WHAT was said, it was HOW it was said and done. It is so NOT NOT NOT a matter of "boinking" or "sex lives", and it was beyond infuriating, not to mention frustrating and hurtful, to see people on here who should have damn well known better making it out to be. There was no reason at all to even bring us up, especially not in the manner it was done.

If we were to consider doing something like that, I'd think it would be best to leave it up to those who've donated to make the final decision. It's their contributions, which they made for a specific reason, they should be the ones deciding how to use them. We can't just decide on our own to donate it, it wouldn't be right.
