Oldsmobile to end production Thursday

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The last Oldsmobile is scheduled to roll off a Lansing assembly line this week, ending production of an automobile line that began in the city in 1897.

(snip)

The last Oldsmobile will be an Alero, the only model still in production. General Motors has slowly phased out other Olds models the past few years.

The final Alero will go to Lansing's R.E. Olds Transportation Museum.

I own an Olds. (95 Cutlass Ciera). Thursday will be a sad day.

2. jerry was a race car driver, he drove so goddamned fast..
Never did win no checkered flag
But he never did come in last
Jerry was a race car driver
He’d say El Solo number one
With a Bocephus sticker on his 442
He’d light ’em up just for fun

RIP Oldsmobile.

10. Oldsmobiles Were KNOWN For Kickass Radios
When I was a Boy Scout back in the '60s, my scoutmaster had two Oldsmobiles - a full-size '62 wagon and a '63 F-85 coupe. And they both had great sounding AM radios.

Like the one in this picture, only it was grey with no vinyl roof and red, black, and white plaid upholstery. My second wife and I paid $450 for it in 1986 and had it for three years before it started falling apart - at 150,000 miles.

Great car......

8. This is going to be really hard on the city of Lansing
They don't have the most diverse economy. Olds and state government are the two main employers.

16. GM, thru Cadillac is still alive and kicking in Lansing...
Thanks to the new Lansing Grand River Plant currently producing the new Cadillac CTS sedan, STS sedan and the SRX Sports-utility.

However I will miss Oldsmobile.

Plymouth went away in 2001 then we have Oldsmobile's demise...RIP to both great American brands.

21. With decreased tax revenue
(mostly from the workers, I'll wager), the government jobs will be endangered too.

Sad.

This might be another stunt to lure in customers. They did this a couple years ago, saying Olds was to go away...

that thing was a TANK. In fact, when I finally saved up for something a little sportier, its final stop was the demolition derby and the guy that bought it from me said it did real well. I remember scavenging the auto scrap yards for parts for it - back then I knew what a solenoid was... Now, I never even raise my car's hood :-( I hate to hear the Olds will be no more, it will be a sad day.

19. The "Olds" was a kick-ass hot rod in the early 50's
Yes I know I'm an old coot but... those early Olds V8's were the shit! I once owned a '51 sedan with a bored & stroked 394" with a Cad LaSalle top shift tranny. I blew off a Corvette stingray with that beast. & how bout their pioneer work with automatic trannys? Ever hear of the B&M stick-hydro? To be honest, I think a '50 Old's coupe would be a great resto-rod project car...... Guess I'll just go buy myself a Japanese econo-box (NOT, never have-never will).

20. They pulled this stunt a couple years ago...
Sales skyrocketed so they didn't ditch the brand and then went on a few months later to boast about how great their sales were. :eyes:

Needless to say, I won't ever buy an Olds.

23. This Lansing guy is saddened. 107 years, and a great song.
I will be visiting the Olds Museum very soon. From 1905, you all know the tune:

Come away with me Lucile in my merry Oldsmobile
Down the road of life we’ll fly automo-bubbling you and I.
To the church we’ll swiftly steal, then our wedding bells will peal,
You can go as far you like with me, In my merry Oldsmobile

25. Me too!
It was my first car. A hand me down from my Mom. Had to use Premium gas, and got about 9 miles to the gallon. It was very easy to push the speedometer needle past 120.

In the late seventies my friends and I drag raced stock Trans-Ams and other "fast cars" a few times. Smoked 'em all.

Huge bench front and back seats. Handy for a teenager.
