10 Songs You Never Want to Hear Again
Are there songs out there that you just can't stand any longer? Ones in which you'd die happy if you never hear them again? Well here's your chance to sound off on 10 songs you never want to hear again.

As a guideline, try not to list "everything by" a particular artist. Just one song, not an entire body of work. (Same goes for whole albums)

Here's my list:

10. "Enter Sandman" - worst song on Metallica's first worst album.

9."Wild Thing" - every version...

8. "Magic Carpet Ride" first of 2 entries by Steppenwolf

7. "Somebody to Love"- I just never liked Jefferson Airplane. Don't know why.

6."God Bless the USA"- I know some trolling freeper douchebag is going to think I am anti-American for listing this one, but this song just plain sucks. There are better patriotic songs out there. Ray Charles' version of "America the Beautiful" moves me to tears, as did Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner" after 9-11. And James Brown's "Living in America" is just badass!

5."Margaritaville"- Hate to step on any toes, but I cant fucking stand Jimmy Buffet....and if I could, I'm sure I'd still hate this song.

4."Panama"- When I moved to Cleveland, I heard this 4 times in one day on the radio. I think Cleveland has a Panama fetish or something.

3. "Born to be Wild"- played out and cliche. Not to mention after seeing the Steppenwolf Behind the Music, John Kay comes across as a major dickhead.

2. "Stairway to Heaven"- Since this song is #1 on just about every other list, it's #2 on mine. This is the lamest, most overrated Zeppelin song.

1. "Freebird"- Ahh, the song that launched a thousand mullets, an anthem to who the fuck knows what. Something for a drunken redneck to hollar for during a Sade concert.

1. Although I love it....it needs to be retired...
As the 'last-call' song of the evenings..

The Day the Music Died, Don McLean

(they play Proud to Be an American at the end of my son's school dances)

Could I add...Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw to that list?

79. I played in his back-up orchestra
at the Kennedy Center a few years ago. I thought he was terrific! And the guys in the band that was travelling with him at the time were the nicest people you could hope to meet.

It was an odd venue for Taylor. With all the chandeliers and hoity-toity fru-fru decor (can you tell I don't like that hall?!) the audience was a little intimidated...but that meant that they actually listened to his music rather than chatting through the concert and later talking about how wonderful it was.

The ice broke after one of his songs, when the hall was completely silent. Some female fan called out, "I love you!" and everybody howled while Taylor blushed onstage.

11. No, no, no. Well, ok, a couple are correct

PROBABLY METALLICA's SINGLE BEST SONG AFTER THREE OR FOUR RECORDS PF USELESS JUNK

9."Wild Thing" - every version...YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE NOT HEARD JIMI HENDRIX' VERSION

8. "Magic Carpet Ride" first of 2 entries by Steppenwolf....AH, HELL, IT AINT THAT BAD.

7. "Somebody to Love"- I just never liked Jefferson Airplane. Don't know why. I CAN'T IMAGINE WHY ANYONE WOULD NOT LIKE JEFFERSON AIRPLAINE, EITHER. (BEFORE THEY BECAME A DUMBASS ARENA BAND, 'STARSHIP,' IN THE TRADITION OF JOURNEY AND ELO. EARLY JEFFERSON AIRPLANE IS HOT. LISTEN TO 'VOLUNTEERS.'

OK, AGREED. THIS SONG IS JUST DUMBASS JINGOISM. I LIKED THE ONION: "LEE GREENWOOD HOPES FOR WAR SO HE CAN SELL A FEW MORE COPIES OF THAT STUPID SONG.'

5."Margaritaville"- Hate to step on any toes, but I cant fucking stand Jimmy Buffet....and if I could, I'm sure I'd still hate this song. OH HELL, IT'S JUST A DRUNKEN YUPPIE SONG. FAIRLY HARMLESS.

4."Panama"- When I moved to Cleveland, I heard this 4 times in one day on the radio. I think Cleveland has a Panama fetish or something. VAN HALEN SHOULD BE HUMANELY PUT DOWN AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. EVERY VERSION OF THE BAND HAS SUCKED WORSE THAN THE ONE THAT PRECEDED IT. SOMEBODY SHOULD TELL THE LITTLE VAN HALEN BOY, EDDIE, THAT SPEED DOES NOT NECESSARILY SIGNIFY TALENT.

3. "Born to be Wild"- played out and cliche. Not to mention after seeing the Steppenwolf Behind the Music, John Kay comes across as a major dickhead. ANY SONG WRITTEN BY A MAN WITH THE COOLEST PUNK NAME EVER, MARS BONFIRE, IS NOT APPROPRIATE FOR CRITICISM. AND IF JOHN KAY CAME OFF AS A DICKHEAD, THE VH1 THING DID NOT SPEND ENOUGH TIME ON HIS BACKING OF FREE SPEECH EFFORTS.

2. "Stairway to Heaven"- Since this song is #1 on just about every other list, it's #2 on mine. This is the lamest, most overrated Zeppelin song. IT'S TIRESOME, ALL RIGHT, BUT ANY SONG THAT GOT SO GODDAMN MUCH AIRPLAY WOULD BE BY NOW.

1. "Freebird"- Ahh, the song that launched a thousand mullets, an anthem to who the fuck knows what. Something for a drunken redneck to hollar for during a Sade concert. AGREED. SOUTHERN ROCK DIED WITH DUANE ALLMAN, BUT THIS SONG AND OTHERS IN THE GENRE KEPT THE CORPSE LIMPING ALONG FAR PAST ALL DECENCY.

Mullets my ass. Besides, blame classic rock radio for the overkill, not the fans. Real rednecks hate Skynyrd, because they were longhaired rockers, and hell, they campaigned for Jimmy Carter back in the day. Plus, they have that anti-gun song. So much for your theory.

I will agree that Jimmy Buffett sucks ass though, especially 'Margaritaville'.

On edit: Anyone who disrupts a Sade concert can't be all bad.

27. I love 'em
I always have to come to their defense because either 1) people on DU listen to too much classic rock radio and let that influence them, or 2) have unresolved high school issues with the people who liked Skynyrd then, or 3) usually south-bashing is involved.

FWIW, the surviving members of the band only play it for the fans - they have many, many other songs they would rather play from those days, and I agree. But it is too easy to bash "Freebird" - usually a 'hip' factor is involved.

Too bad I can't have you stop by after work like in the 'old days'. I could play their pre-Allmans single (1968) "Need All My Friends", and you would wonder what the hell you were thinking. ;-)

And! Name ONE song on the their 1977 final release "Street Survivors" that sounds Allmanesque. You can't, because it doesn't! (As a fan of both, I can say that and back it up scientifically with my guitar, lol).

Let's face it, music-bashing threads suck. I would rather talk about what is praiseworthy. Wouldn't you?

56. another myth destroyed
That was a JOKE. They LOVED Neil Young. In the documentary of "Freebird: The Movie", Ronnie Van Zant was recorded talking about what a genius Neil was. Look at the cover of Skynyrd's "Street Survivors" shirt, and he is wearing a Neil Young shirt, of "Tonight's The Night". Amazes me how so many so-called enlightened liberals don't have a sense of humor and get that song. A JOKE.

Neil LOVED "Sweet Home Alabama". He said he was "proud to have his name in a song like that, they play it like they mean it."

When RVZ died, Neil played the song live.

In the movie "Rust Never Sleeps", Neil is wearing a Skynyrd shirt at one point.

Also, do you know the songs "Powderfinger" and "Sedan Delivery"? Neil wrote those for Skynyrd to cover, but the plane crash occurred before they ever had a chance.

As for the shoe shining part, that is total bullshit, as evidenced by the info I provided in this post, and I may remind you, the original Skynyrd never put out a bad album. Much as I love Neil, he put out at least as many turkeys as good ones. I would say they were both worthy, for different reasons.

*shakes head*

60. Yup, Neil and the LS boys were tight
Amazing to think that "Powderfinger" (possibly my favorite rock and roll song ever) was meant to be performed by LS.

"Freebird" is a tired old thing, as is "Stairway." But it's not these bands' fault that they recorded songs that became so popular that everyone's now utterly sick of them. I adore the mighty Zep, but every time I play ZOSO, I skip over "Stairway!"

66. Well,,,,
... you follow the band more closely than I do. "Sweet Home Alabama", with it's references to Watergate and the gov'ner and all, sounds like a Southern fool anthem to me. (I'm Southern, I can say that :))

If they were joking about Neil it sure didn't sound like it.

As for their body of work, yes Neil has put out some turkeys. But his best outshines theirs by a handy margin IMHO.

47. Let me Correct Myself re; Skynyrd
I think Skynyrd's great (pre-plane crash skynyrd, that is). They're also one of the most misunderstood bands in rock-n-roll history. By putting "Freebird" at the top of my list I'm targeting the absolute overkill of that song. I think their music's great;I'm just sick of that track.

The radio started to make me hate songs by overplaying them, so I understand. But, as I said, the band would agree... I think they would have not played it so much if not for the fans. Sometimes fans can be the worst.

58. Oh my gosh
That list could almost be a partial list of my favorite songs. Well, kinda. I LOVE both "Baby Love" and "Time After Time." I actually just downloaded "I'm Too Sexy" upon hearing it made the 50 Worst Rock Songs list, but I didn't love it like I had when it first came out. Actually, I found it pretty annoying. And the Beatles are my favorite band but I was never terribly fond of "Yesterday." I guess I was mostly surprised to find that someone hated "Baby Love" and "Time After Time" ... and "Tears in Heaven."

Please understand that I'm in no way criticizing your taste... just expressing my surprise at how diametrically opposed it is to mine.

41. Any of the following will cause me to turn the dial to something else,
anything else!

1. Seasons in the Sun
2. American Pie
3. I Need a Hero
4. anything by Neal Diamond
5. anything by Tommy James and the Shondells
6. anything by Bread
7. Tell Laura I Love Her
8. Havin' My Baby
9. You Gotta Fight for Your Right to Pary
10. The Macarena

I am totally ignorant of anything past about 1991, when I stopped taking Jazzercise, so my list does not include any of the one-hit wonders of the 1990s or the first years of the twenty-first century.

64. Isn't number 10 one of those one hit wonders of the 90's?
BTW #9 is a good song and an even better music video

77. As a former college professor
I really, really object to the philosophy behind that song.

At the height of the Reagan administration, with injustices occurring here and abroad, and utter student apathy about it--even enthusiasm for Reagan as a "cool guy," the radio is constantly playing "You Gotta Fight for Your Right to PARTY?"

That song reigned during a period when the college where I was teaching was hard pressed to keep up with the damage caused by the party animals.

44. okay, I'll give it a try.
I'm sure there are plenty more, but it's been a couple of decades since I bothered to listen to anything I didn't really like; makes it hard to find new stuff sometimes, but there you are. Songs I never want to hear again will come from when I was listening to songs on the radio and/or tv. In no particular order:

10. I'll agree with "God Bless the USA."

9. Angry American: Courtesy of the red, white, and blue

8. Who let the dogs out

7. Everything I do, I do it for you

6. You light up my life

5. Hooked on a feeling

4. Billy, don't be a hero

3. You're having my baby

2. Feelings

1. Do you really want to hurt me?

55. Honey by Bobby Russell
The Smothers Brothers did a hilarious version of this. It's the sappiest, dumbest song ever:

See the tree how big it's grown, but friend,
it has-n't been too long, it was-n't big.
I laughed at her and she got mad,
the first day that she plant-ed it was just a twig.

Then the first snow came and she ran out to brush the
snow a-way so it would - n't die.
Came run-nin' in all ex-cit - ed, slipped and
al - most hurt her-self, I laughed 'til I cried.___

Yes, she was al-ways young at heart,
kind -a dumb and kind -a smart and I loved her so.
I sur-prised her with a pup-py;
kept me up all Christ-mas eve two years a-go.

And it would sure em-bar-ass her when I came home
from work-ing late 'cause I would know
That she'd been sit-tin' there and cry-in
o-ver some sad and sil-ly late, late show.

And Hon-ey, I miss you, and I'm be-ing good.___
And I'd love to be with you
if on-ly I could.

Second Verse
She wrecked the car and she was sad and
so a - fraid that I'd be mad, but what the heck,
Tho' I pre-tend-ed to be, guess you could say
she saw through me and hugged my neck.

I came home un - ex - pect - ed - ly and found
her cry - ing need-less-ly in the mid-dle of the day.
And it was in the ear-ly Spring when flow-ers bloom
and rob-ins sing she went a - way.____

Yes, one day while I was - n't home while she
was there and all a - lone the an-gels came.
Now all I have is mem-o-ries of Hon-ey, and
I wake up nights and call her name.

And now my life's an emp - ty stage where Hon-ey lived
and Hon-ey played and love grew up.
A small cloud pass-es o - ver - head and
cries down in the flow-er bed that Hon-ey loved.

And Hon-ey, I miss you, and I'm be-ing good.___
And I'd love to be with you
if on-ly I could.

And I LIKE Elton John, some of his overplayed mega-hits still stand up really well ("Daniel" comes to mind). But "Bennie" was irritating the day it was released, and now it's just intolerable.

68. The list begins with "Love Potion #9"
and proceeds with Snow's one hit about licking the boom-boom now.

Rounding the corner, we see every song that was ever a hit for Smashmouth--we see no need to list titles as they are essentially all the same song.

We never just wanna "fly" with Sugar Ray again.

With all due love for the Barenaked Ladies, it'll be much longer than "one week" before we ever wanna hear that one again.

No desire to say Destiny's Cleavage's name, say their name, say their name ever again.

And shoot everyone responsible for "My Baby Does the Hanky Panky" if they're not already dead.

71. Number one is that song from the Six Flags ad
with the "old guy" (badly made-up younger person) dancing. This is a clear number one, well ahead of the rest.

2. America, "Tin Man"
3. BOC, "Burning for You" (my favorite band shamed by that garbage)
4. The Who, "Boris the Spider"
5. Some female disco singer, "Ring My Bell"
6. Guns & Roses, "Welcome to the Jungle"
7. "Beat it," Michael Jackson
8. Led Zeppelin, "Rock 'n' Roll" (GROSSLY overplayed)
9. That "boot in your ass" Toby Keith song
10. Any rap / hip hop I've ever heard ties for tenth, I hate it all

81. My ears!
10. "YMCA"- even though it's about a gay bar.

9. "Feels good to be a woman"- I don't even care if that's the real title!

8."Smoke on the water"- the best of the 10, but it gets old, too.

7."Call of Kutulu"- They mispelled "Cuthlhu"!

6."Yellow Laserbeams"- A good song by http://frontalot.com">Mc Frontalot, but it gets old

5."Time Warp"- lets never do it again!

4."One More Cup of Coffee", the White Stripes version

3."Du Hast"- Why can't people listen to Rammstien's GOOD songs?... nvm

2."Dragula" -THE HORROR! THE HORROR

1."Hot in here"- The song that has my classmates saying things like "her" and "ther" instead of 'here' and 'there'. I hate that song.
