1. Love that Coltrane poster --- I like Have a talk with God by Stevie |
|
many more --- but its been years (my record collection is in storage)
But I try to play that sax opening in a Love Supreme
MAN!!! It's sweet.
When I was a teenager I went to a Styevie concert at a college gym where he played the drums and the stage was set so you could go all the way around it. I was close enough to touch Stevie practically when he came back to play. He is a master and, unfortunately, went a little too pop in recent years. But he was the master innovator for awhile. I think disco did him a lot of harm.
But Coltrane IS God!
There is an Alice Coltrane version of Love Supreme with Swami Satchidanda narrating some mystical verses - AWESOME! Red Hot and Blue Jazz compilation, I think.

I have repeatedly said that the opening 30 second sax flurry on A Love Supreme is the best piece of recorded music I've ever heard!
What year was the Stevie concert you went to?

at a state college nearby
and, yeah, I agree on that sax flurry. But it is tyricky and I never fully mastered it.
The rest is more complex and a lightning storm, but the opening has grace, passion, and wisdom.
I love Sonny Fortune and the sax work on Miles Davis' Bitches Brew too.

I hate that most of the really great American music was made before I was born!!!

Tiger Woods sees Stevie Wonder on the golf course; Tiger: Stevie, I didn't know you played golf? Stevie: Yeah I just put a beeper in the hole and aim for the sound. Tiger: Well, we should play a round sometime. Stevie: Sure, just pick a night.
