Hot Tuna was formed by Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady in 1969 to provide them with a vehicle for playing music that they could not play within the confines of Jefferson Airplane. They're still trucking in the 21st Century.

Uncle Sam Blues (1970)
(Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady)

Got my questionnaire baby
You know I'm headed off for war
I got my questionnaire baby
You know I'm headed off for war
Well, now I'm gonna do some fightin'
Well, no one knows what for
Well, Uncle Sam ain't no woman
You know he sure can take your man
Said Uncle Sam ain't no woman
You know he sure can take your man
Well, there's 40,000 guys in the service list
Doin' somethin' somewhere they just don't understand
Well, I'm gonna do some fightin'
Of that I can be sure
Said I'm gonna do some fightin'
Of that I can be sure
Well, now I want to kill somebody
Won't have to break no kind of law
I got my questionnaire baby
You know I'm headed off for war
I got my questionnaire baby
You know I'm headed off for war
Well, I want to kill somebody
Won't have to break no kind of law

1. Hooray, I'm not the only Hot Tuna fan left!
I still think The Water Song is the single most beautiful rock & roll instrumental. The Allman Brothers' Jessica notwithstanding.

2. Agreed
On both songs!

Hot Tuna's touring the East Coast right now. I'd love to see them.

6. Hot Tuna was the Airplane in my book.

"The State of the Union Address notwithstanding, here's a song called "Down and Out""......as relevant now as way back when.

Jimmy Cox, 1922

1.
Once I lived the life of a millionaire.
Spent all my money; I just did not care.
Took all my friends out for a good time;
bought bootleg whiskey, champagne and wine.

2.
Then I began to fall so low.
Lost all my good friends;
I did not have nowhere to go.
I get my hands on a dollar again,
I'm gonna hang on to it till that eagle grins, yeah.

3.
No, nobody knows you
when you're down and out.
In you pocket, not one penny.
And as for friends, you don't have any.

4.
When you fin'lly get back up on your feet again,
ev'rybody wants to be your long lost friend.
Said, it's mighty strange, 'out a doubt.
Nobody knows you,
nobody knows,
nobody knows you
when you're down and out.

Was at a bar in Portsmouth, NH a couple of years ago and who shows up but Jorma Kaukonon and Phil Lesh. Blew me away.
