Festivals - Renaissance
Want to attend a great festival. Need to run away from this day and age of B*shdumb and TN al's needing to be catered to while he is ill!
How should I dress for the Renaissance Festival?
Remember I am a female with long red hair. Would they stone me?!
Which festivals would you recommend to get away from it all?

Within reason, no Republican conventions to view the aliens from outerspace...

1. Dress normal unless you want to be a 'wench'

The male characters are always très gallant to you.

Are you in the International Anachonists Society?

2. dress comfortably
wear good shoes for walking a lot, most Ren Fairs have costume rentals if you wish to dress in period.

3. Wear what you like
a long dress in teal would probably look good with your red hair. You can rent costumes at these fairs if you like. There's one fair down in TX at Waxahatchie that is pretty good.

6. I always recommend costume if you are trying to "get away from it all"
If you rent at the fair, you know how to dress so that you are comfortable. For a little mischief, consider dressing as a young man in stead of as a woman.

There are two really good Renaissance festivals in the upper midwest. Just north of Chicago in mid to late summer is the Bristol Renaissance Faire at the Wisconsin border. Another takes place near the Twin Cities in the fall. A quick search on the internet will bring up several sites with loads of info on Renaissance Festivals... and maybe more ideas for enjoying the day.

7. The Pennsic War
I don't know if you would call it a Renaissance festival, but it's that sort of thing x 1000. I think it goes on for a week or two these days. I used to go to it when I was a teenager (last one was about 20 years ago, and I've heard that it's grown a great deal since then). My life at home during that time was difficult, so it was nice to get away from reality completely for a few days every year.

Here's some links that I found, I'm sure there's more out there:
www.pennsic.net
www.PennsicWar.org

Going as a Celt is the obvious answer, but there really aren't any limits. It's make believe, after all. :-)

8. Pennsic and the SCA
Thats a great event to go to, although there are more rules for a SCA event, after all its not make beleive there, its an attempt at actual historical reenactment. It has many vendors and good food! Make shure you stop by Pennsic EMS tavern! They have great food and provide an invaluable service for the event (SCA Combat is dangerous!)

9. Yeah, I just asked a friend about it
I guess you do have to become an SCA member to attend the event, and you can'tt be garbed in "mundane" clothing at all (must wear a costume). Joining the SCA wouldn't be hard; I think they have groups in just about every city. They expect 12,000 to attend Pennsic this year. Man, it certainly has grown since Pennsic ten!
