The Joel Hodgson Appreciation Thread
He taught the Bots all kinds of stuff about the 60s, like, it wasn't uncommon for your mom to come and serve you a great big char-broiled steak while she smoked and drank a Tab and made your dad another Manhattan for the road, and that was just breakfast!

He played hide-and-seek with the elusive and inexplicable forces which control the universe. He modeled Don Martin's Doc Martens. And he led the debate about whether Mr. B Natural was a man or a woman, a question which was never resolved.

He sang about waffles, and lemurs, and pants, and Frank. He was way funnier than Mike, and yes, way cutier too.

And if you're waiting for me to tell you something really depressing, like he's dead or Republican - well buddy, it's worse than that:

He writes and produces for the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

Joel, what happened? Come back to us, son!

Only Love Pads the Film

1. My lovely wife and I, on our first date, went to see Joel live.
At a comedy club in Mpls that has since closed. How we laughed. We've been Joel fans ever since.

A former co-worker was his college roommate. Tells some great stories.

11. I saw Joel at the Comedy Gallery
sometime in the 80's. I think it was love at first sight. I think I went as Jiffy Pop popcorn one Halloween, per his suggestion. He is hilarious!

21. I got on board sometime after that.
I did drive out to Best Brains in Hopkins one snowy afternoon to buy some collectibles. Neither Joel nor Mike was around, but one of the interns showed me the place. Very cool, looked like a fun place to work.

The show just wasn't the same after he left - no offense to Mike, but he was no Joel.

9. Brilliant comedian.
But I always felt that comparing Joel and Mike is like the apples/oranges scenario.

No one complains about the new Crow when they moved to the SciFi channel.

Both sets have their funny points.

10. Joel will be dear to my heart always for turning me on to MST3K
Ill never forget watching the first ep I saw ( The Unearthly with John Carridine ) And I was in love with a show about a guy and his two bots trapped in outer space watching bad movies ever since.
The Mike/Joel thing is defiantly the definition of apples and oranges. Both completely different but both great. For me the show never failed to not make me laugh no matter who was in the theater. But I will always think of Joel as the man who WAS MST3K

13. There was an ep where the movie was pre-empted by a short film
in which little Timmy goes to the World's Fair. They flash a sign for the display "Chemical Wonderland."

"Uh oh, I think we've all been there..." mused Joel.

I can't remember the title of this ep, or the movie that ran with it, but it was my favorite. Little help?

15. It's not all about Joel vs. Mike
That would be like Superman vs. Batman, okay probably more like Batman vs Spiderman, or Bugs vs. Daffy, or Quisp vs. Quake.

Mike was there from the beginning and stayed till the end, and was very very funny though not funnier than Joel and certainly not cutier.

But that's not primarily what this thread is about.

This is about a guy named Joel, not too different from me or you. Back when a fully stocked bar was considered standard office furniture and office parties were like something out of a Playboy cartoon. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. The cars go in here, and we have parking, we have parking for three--no, thirty thousand compact trucks and cars. Then we build a tram off your upper lip and then onto the Capitol Records building, it goes here. I need my uh, my copy of "The Fountainhead." Uh, Howard Roark? Oh, Howard...Roark...

And he's working for Jimmy Kimmel. We gotta get him some real work.

We got movie sign!
