28. Never thought I'd defend Arizona...
I absolutely hate this state. It's full of hypocrites and is one of the most boring places in existance... but the people here are nicer than most places I've visited. Most of the "out of towners", travelers or people who have moved here from out of state have commented how nice the people are here. You must have spent too much time around ASU, those students tend to be the biggest pricks in existance.

The rudest experiences for me had to be rural Missouri, fucking xenophobes.

Nicest is Oklahoma.

Yup, I'm a native-born Texan from a family of native-born Texans that goes as far back in the State as anyone in the family can remember.

People love to throw it in our faces that Shrub is from Texas...well, he's not. He's from Connecticutt but you don't see me giving them a hard time about that.

Texas liberals (and yes there are a lot more of us than you think) get tired of being painted with the same brush. Especially when people seem to conveniently forget all about Texans like Ivins and Hightower and Barbara Jordan and the Dixie Chicks. :)

So I ask the desk clerk, "How do I get to Fenway Park?" She glares at me for a minute, then thrusts something that looks like a map in my direction. "There are SIGNS," she says. "Just read the SIGNS."

Three hours later (after dealing with the worst drivers in the universe), I get to the game in the eighth inning just at about the time that the "Yankees suck" chant is going up. I keep it to myself, but I'd sure rather be in the Bronx.

10. If it was rudest city, I'd say Philly... state? Connecticut
The whole state of PA is not as bad as Philly, though. Pittsburgh people are way more mellow then Philly people.

For state, I'll have to say Connecticut, mostly because it has a far greater proportion of urban residents compared to generally more mellow rural residents.

...is that a majority of Californians are from other places, and they come over here, not only having no clue how freeways work, but also bringing driving habits from where they lived before, which do not work out here.

14. NYC is surrounded by a 100 mile 'ring of rudeness'
which, of course, covers several states. I was educated about this phenomenon by my college girlfriend who was from East Brunswick, NJ (well within the 'ring'.)

I chalk it up to fast pace.

Reminds me of a joke:

...visitor in NYC walks up to a guy in a hardhat fixing the street and says "can you tell me how to get to 5th Avenue or should I just go f*ck myself"

Sorry if I offend - I really do love the big apple & the northeast.

Midwestern Nice is a myth. I hate when they come an hour early to one of my kids events and rope off 20 seats for their families. They don't understand how to drive, and get angry when you assume they will stop for red lights or turn into the correct lane.

In Minnesota, however, I was flaggergasted at the number of people who stopped when I was putting up political signs to check and see if I'd broker down.

Go figger.

20. Illinois, CT, or perhaps Georgia or Alabama or Florida
quite possibly also one of the Carolinas or Maryland. All rude states, that's for sure.

It isn't NY, HI, WI, AK, or MN, that's for sure. NY *CITY* might be in-your-face, but it's almost never just plain rude, and the rest of the state is very pleasant.

Well, on the surface, I would have to say New York. BUT, there's a surface geniality that you see in a lot of places that barely masks some pretty deep mistrust and dislike. Having lived in NY for four years (city and Westchester), I can tell you that (broad generalization here) the mistrust and dislike so deep elsewhere in the country is shallower and closer to the surface around NYC.

39. Hmmm...
I was in Boston about a year ago, and most of the people I met were pretty friendly but there was an element of grumpiness. Some people weren't so much rude as they just seemed to be very unhappy. Arizona folk were pretty nice but I have to seriously question a state where female chain gangs are a source of pride. I lived in New Jersey for three years when I was a kid, and while there's plenty of nice people there, the state would have to get my vote for the rudest. I remember when I moved to California and noticing how different it was in how people reacted to each other. People were just so much more friendly.

Southern Jersey is pretty, but that doesn't change how rude people are.

And as a former RI resident, I don't think there is one nice beach in RI. Some many of them are rocky.

And even if you were to get me to agree that they are nice, they are still populated with complete a-holes.

I lived in six different states by the time I was 12, and I am heartily sick of all the pronouncements made by people from one area of the country about people in another area of the country. Thank you, all you people who told me I'd be murdered in D.C., that Southern crime is caused by people from the Northeast moving down there, etc., etc.

By the way, my parents were both from New York and very, very strict about manners.
