No one ever said "thanks, come again" in any of the stores they shopped at. My momma figures it's because they expect everyone is a tourist and they'll never be back. But she said it still was a little weird at first coming from the South where that kind of thing is normal.

I don't live in PA, don't have family there, don't have friends there anymore (they all went DC or NYC) and haven't even really been back there in many years.
But, I have lived in 6 states for considerable periods and I perceived PA as the friendliest people.

Perhaps they just don't like Californians, but when I moved to Cincinnati it seemed like people went out of their way to make me feel unwelcome. It wasn't my politics, I didn't talk about it. I dressed normal and tried to be nice. Oh well.

Unless we're talking about the Reds, of course.
For the record, *I* probably wouldn't have said that Ohio is the "friendliest". I've always been treated well in the South, especially Kentucky and South Carolina. Politics aside, Southerners are generally very friendly people. Then again, I'm a white male with a talent for parroting someone's accent right back at them.

I've lived in several states and visited many more, and far and away the friendliest people have been here in Kansas. Oddly enough, just across the border in Missouri people aren't half as friendly. Not sure why.
That said, you meet nice people everywhere.

No, it's a very basic essential friendliness that I constantly see in Kansans and rarely see in Missourians, at least not in the ones that live next door to Kansas.
I'm one of those that considers having a bumper sticker on my car to remind southerners they lost the war and to get over it.

49. Missouri didn't secede, except for one county. |
|
Calloway County declared itself The Kingdom of Calloway. That was on the sheriff's cars when I was in college. Although there were certainly mixed sympathies. Oddly Kansas received an influx of southerners and anti-slavery people in the 1850's. That led to a bit of bloodshed. Also, in the years following the war there was another influx of southerners, many from Tennessee and Kentucky who were escaping the post war poverty, civil disorder and disease. TB was a big problem.
Sorry, I hope that's not too much information. :D

I had always believed the 'southern hospitality' concept, and was raised with the firm understanding that Yankees were rude and nasty people. Some of the nicest people I've ever met have been in New York and Chicago, and the vast majority of Grade A assholes I've met have been my fellow statesmen. I would have to jump over the border to cast my vote; Toronto is the freindliest city I've ever visited.

When we travelled to Colorado from Texas (and from the East coast) last year I was struck by the difference in how one is regarded "on the streets" in the 2 places........in Texas people look you in the eye, smile, and greet you. In Denver we felt invisible!
I love my presence being positively noticed in Texas too!

We went there on a vacation a few years ago and every last person we talked with was courteous, cordial, helpful.
We were in shock when our car crapped out and we had to take it to a Midas station. The girl behind the counter said, "Good morning! How are you guys doing today?" We said fine. Then she asked us what we needed. When we told her she said, "We can get your car on the line in about 20 minutes. It's going to take us about 45 minutes to finish up. Would that be OK?"
Our jaws dropped. Here in Milwaukee when we took the car in we were just "6 cars ahead of you". Here they told us how long it would be, gave us options, etc. She was SUPER nice.
We walked around to the malls. The people there were very helpful. The strangest thing, though, was the freeways. People slowed down to let us in!

In the small towns there, they would do anything for you. When my parents home burned down years ago, leaving them homeless and with 9 kids, a complete stranger heard of it, donated land and with the help of some others and my family, built us a new home which we lived in until '97 (when it was destroyed by a tornado, but I digress) During the winters, the snow and ice storms leave the Ozark roads pretty hard to travel on. People with four wheel drives would call or come by to check and see if we needed anything, which was important because my father's health was so bad. They would also pull you out of ditches if you tried to drive yourself and didn't make it.
A friend of mine, in another part of the state, lost his job and his car gave up the ghost as well at the same time. I'm sure some of you can relate how things all seem to hit at once. Someone heard of his problems and donated (free) a used truck which still ran great.
Just some of the things I remember.

in the travel mags, etc, and well-earned, at least here in Charleston. All the "pardons" "Ma'am's" and "thank ya kindly's" flow like molasses here. You can generally strike up a conversation with anyone in town (with the notable exception of fast food window staff) and get a nice, truly warm five minutes out of them. Even the angry Yankees that come down (a former one myself) in time quite screaming in traffic and settle into the Buffettesque "3/4 time" of the region.
Thank y'all fer ya time.

I lived on the West Coast, Midwest and currently living on the East Coast. I've traveled most of this country including Hawaii and Alaska. Missouri gets my vote.
