There are fireflies outside my apartment.
I was walking back from the laundry room and there were 4 or 5 of them flitting around the tree under my window. I haven't seen fireflies in ages...maybe since I was a kid. They're so sparkly. :)

Reminds me of two things. Trying to catch 'em with my little brother when I was a kid. And one of my favorite Calvin and Hobbes cartoons where Calvin is clenching up and Hobbes finally tells him he doesn't think it matters how much he clenches his butt...it ain't gonna glow. :)

I'm thinking maybe I need to go sit on the porch with a glass of iced tea and watch 'em. :)

1. Catch'em, put'em in a jar and use them instead of electricity.
Well, maybe not.

:)

3. I can remember being sorely disappointed...
when we caught one in a jar, took it inside, turned out the lights, and found out you couldn't use them to read by. :)

So we set it loose. :)

Baby, I Love Your Way
Peter Frampton

Shadows grow so long before my eyes
And they're moving across the page
Suddenly the day turns into night
Far away from the city
But don't hesitate 'cuz your love won't wait
Ooh baby I love your way (everyday)
Wanna tell you I love your way
Wanna be with you night and day
*****
Moon appears to shine and light the sky
With the help of some fireflies
I wonder how they have the power to shine, shine, shine
I can see them under the pine
*****
But don't hesitate'cuz your love won't wait
Ooh baby I love your way (everyday)
Wanna tell you I love your way
Wanna be with you night and day
But don't hesitate'cuz your love won't wait
I can see the sunset in your eyes
Brown and grey and blue besides
Clouds are stalking islands in the sun
I wish I could buy one out of season
But don't hesitate'cuz your love won't wait
Ooh baby I love your way (everyday)
Wanna tell you I love your way
Wanna be with you night and day
Ooh baby I love your way (everyday)
Wanna tell you I love your way
Wanna be with you night and day

9. God, I miss fireflies.

There are none in Houston, and I've never gone a summer without them before I moved here.

10. You must be someplace WARM, you lucky!
They won't be out in New England until late in June.

I grew up with firefly summers in Michigan, then spent most of my life in CA missing them. Glad to be living someplace again where they are part of the seasons' cycle.

When I was living in Bali, I was out riding my motorcycle one night and passed a rice paddy where literally thousands of fireflies had just hatched. Maybe tens or hundreds of thousands, it was impossible to tell, it was just this pulsating, glittering blanket of tiny blue stars, the whole thing reflected in the still water of the rice field. I pulled my bike over and just watched for what must have been an hour. I remember thinking that I should remember that moment all of my life, because I would probably never see anything quite so wonderous ever again.
