Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Edited on Wed May-05-04 12:11 AM by Angelus
Here's what it's about:

"The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The Fifth Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, but is also celebrated in other parts of the country and in U.S.cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16."

1. To think that the original reason was not a party
but a battle where the french got their buts kicked, outside
of Puebla... in 1860

Peoole died damn it, on both sides

7. Admittably it's celebrated differently
In Mexico it's less party, more rememberance and more of a festival to honor those who fought, died, and bled for Mexico's independence from France.

In the states of course nobody knows what it means, and thinks it's just that time where you're supposed to knock down Coronas till you feel like you can speak Spanish and dance with the mariachi.

For me I take the traditional more civil approach in that it's a day to reflect on my own roots, and when I drink, I dedicate the toast to those who died on both sides in a respectful form.

BTW it was 1862.

"Salude"

13. Well some here
seem so far left that anything that has death associated with it is bad. Let's forget the American Revolution, the Civil War, WWI, WWII, and yes Cinco de Mayo.

Please, death is ugly but sometimes people must die fighting for what they believe in. That is honorable! Death in battle is horrific and many French died in the lopsided battle at Puebla, but the Mexicans were fighting an unjust ruler in Maximillian, who really had no idea why he was there, he was but a puppet for the French. People died but Benito Juarez, the democratically elected president was ousted. It was fair then in my eyes to fight the French. The deaths of the French are not being celebrated. It is the honor of fighting for one's country that is honored.

5. I hear that
We have my son's bday, Mother's Day, our anniversary and my bday all in a span of 3 weeks.

August is peaceful. No holidays and I don't know a soul with an August bday.

9. is this what you're referring to?
i just learned of this today, after your reply :):

"Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was Manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico... But as we know....the great ship did not make it to New York... The ship hit an iceberg and sank....and the cargo was forever lost.... The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery....were disconsolate at the loss.... Their anguish was so great that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day.... The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th.... and is known....of course....as Sinko de Mayo.."

how come you're so smart, Archae? :hi:

25. i wonder how the xenophobic right wingnut idiots feel about this holiday
on one hand, it celebrates a defeat of the french, which they could get behind because they despise the french, on the other hand, it's mexicans who are celebrating, whom they also despise!
