Europe not as romantic as it used to be.
Edited on Mon May-10-04 03:06 PM by trof
(Inspired by the "money" thread.)
I haven't been back since the euro took over.
I imagine it's just not the same.
There was something kind of...romantic?...about dealing in francs and marks and escudos and gilders and lira and pesos and such.
Made you feel more like you were really THERE.

1. I still have coins from the DDR!

:7 B-)

I would love to go back and play with Euros. Aren't they suposed to be a little different, a different symbol, in each country to give you some feel for where you are?

4. exactly
With the occasional Real and Baht coins thrown in for good measure ;-)

The Euro coins can be found here :

:hi:

I don't miss the old currencies one bit. It's a completely different feeling, much more comfortable (near a border? just check out the next supermarket on the other side! Like crossing a US state border)

13. What a cool site!
Thanks for sharing Kellanved! :hi: All the coins look so pretty, I just love browsing through them.

I can imagine it's a lot easier if you live near a border. Changing currency everytime I wanted to get groceries would be a real pain.

I'd love to have a Brandenburg Gate €.50 piece.

I met quite a lot people interested in the Euro coins and notes - for example in a tobacco store in New Haven, I was asked to pay in Euros. Well, with the exchange rate as it is, I probably bought my most expensive Gauloises ever (no, not for me; and yes: the owner threw in a lot of freebies).

5. One side is common to all countries
the other is unique to the country (harp=Ireland, Cervantes=Spain).

2. Paris was still Paris with the Euro.

I've never been to Spain when there wasn't a Euro there, but it was pretty romantic in 2003. Oddly enough, England, which still uses the pound, seems to me to be losing its unique character and becoming more Americanized. London is, anyway.

14. I Kinda Figured SOMEONE Would Go There... But It Wasn't Going To Be Me...
I guess after your 'blaming a woman' comment, you're getting a bit braver and bolder. :-)
