Once I was scheduled to go to a conference along with one of my co-workers. He had relatives nearby and said that he wanted to spend an evening with them so, instead of both going in the same car, he would go in his own car.
I drove to the site of the conference using Interstate Highways wherever I could but he took a less congested route using state highways. Upon return, we both filed mileage vouchers. His showed 172 miles one-way while mine showed 161 miles one-way.
The City Clerk reviewing the vouchers immediately suspected fraud and confronted my co-worker with a nasty, snide, "now-I-got-you-you-sonuvabitch" memo, challenging him to reply.
The next day I got a copy of the reply in my in-box.
My co-worker patiently explained that I had taken my full-sized Ford while he had taken his economy-sized Fiat... My wheels were 15" diameter while his were only 13" and therefore had to turn more times to reach the same destination. He provided an attachment of some highly convoluted math and a fake statement from an equally fake highway patrolman to verify his claim.
He got his reimbursement check the next day.
