1. Roy was truly amazing..... |
|
I saw him many times when I lived on the east coast. Used to catch him in funky Maryland bars. Last show I saw was at the Richmond, Va. Mosque, an excellent concert venue. He was blazing that night.
He died in jail....Very sad

5. I called in to a radio station in Eugene Oregon one time |
|
when they were asking for requests. I requested "Roy's Blues".
After the song ended, there was dead silence for about 10 seconds. Then the DJ came back on and said, "Wow".
Roy was great.

6. He inadvertantly invented, by stumbling upon, the "whistle pop" |
|
That would be the ability to create a harmonic by dragging a miniscule portion of the thumb skin across the guitar string immediately after striking it with the plectrum.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, listen to the ending guitar solo of "La Grange" by ZZ Top.
Roy accidentally did it on a recording he was doing and when the recording was finished the rest of the band raved and raved. But Roy did not know what he did or how he did it and had to go home and try to figure it out. He finally figured it out. Heh heh. Amazing!

Roy's early stuff was awesome. "That's What I'm Here For" is my favorite. Later stuff doesn't always quite do it.
On edit: Actually, I've never heard the term "whistle pop", and I've played guitar for 30+ years.

I've never heard the term "chirps," and I've played the guitar for 35 years. Billy Gibbons once referred to them as "whistle pops."
But I trust we both understand what "harmonics" are. ;)
