Worst case of a band selling out to a TV commercial |
|
IMO the worst was when i heard Revolution by The Beatles in a Nike commercial. What made it even worse was Lennon couldn't have a say in it. What moments PO you?

1. The bastardization of Fortunate Son in the jeans commercial... |
|
I use that in my lectures on the media, and add in the next few lines so that my students will know that the song is an old protest song from the 60s.

3. LONDON CALLING by the Clash in a commercial for Jaguar |
|
Could not have been more wrong.
And don't blame the bands...it's usually more of a case of who owns the rights. In the case of the "Revolution" commercial, the blame goes to Michael Jackson, who owns the rights to that song. McCartney, Harrison, and Ringo would have NEVER let that happen had they controlled the entire catalog.

John Fogerty surrendered the rights to all Creedence material in the 70s.

4. Most artists don't own their own stuff... |
|
... but you just KNOW Mick and the lads do.
Shame on them for selling "Start Me Up" to Billy Gates.

17. Mick and Keith own everything from Exile - present. |
|
But they still have to split the 60's catalog (which includes Sticky Fingers, since they started recording it in 1969) with Allen Klein.
So, "Start Me Up" was their fault. Even showed up to play it live in Redmond when they launched Win95. Gates could afford to pay them, even then. But if you ever hear one of their older songs abused, it might not be Mick who got greedy.

19. Dennis Hopper just makes me ill... |
|
I had the misfortune of accidentally landing on his interview with Bob Costas, and I just wanted to throw the television. He said something like, "I supported Bush the first time, and," while looking down at the floor, "I'm not backing out on that now."
