Christians look to form new nation within U.S
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=38571

-Snip-

Calling the approval of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts "the straw that broke the camel's back," a group of Christian activists is in the beginning stages of an effort to have one state secede from the United States to become its own sovereign nation.

"Our Christian republic has declined into a pagan democracy," says Cory Burnell, president of ChristianExodus.org, a non-profit corporation based in Tyler, Texas. "There are some issues people just can't take anymore, and might finally wake up the complacent Christians."

Burnell is leading the charge for a peaceful secession of one state from the union, and after originally considering Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina due to their relatively small populations, coastal access, and the Christian nature of the electorate, Burnell says South Carolina has been selected as the target location.

1. Do It!!!!!!!
And don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. We'd win every election to come. We could bring back a whole bunch of Great Society programs too. That would be worth letting these folks have a state or two to call their own. Where can we donate?

5. I agree.....a one way ticket in, no ticket back.
Let them all live together in one state. I suspect that they'd do themselves in within 20 years.

3. Lord I knew this was coming
And if they do... want to secede, I say... we may be facing a civil war

I do not think they understand that Texas vs US in 1876 forbids this

4. I love this, except for one problem.
Methinks somehow they wouldn't be happy with just their little nation-state. Things might be nice and peaceful for a while, but sooner or later, their evil imperialistic, overcomsumptive nature would drive them to wage total war on the 'liberal infidels.' They'd be after us as soon as they ran out gas for their hummers.

6. This is less and more than it seems to be...
Edited on Tue May-25-04 12:58 AM by RoyGBiv
I posted this previously in the GD thread that discussed this, but the thread itself was so lengthy and flooded with other subjects it was basically ignored.

Suffice to say, the article does not report the full depth of this matter. My comments don't fully explore it either, but this is a little more detail.

What I posted previously:

Folks, this is not new. This is simply the latest incarnation of a fanciful plan that has been the dream of various organizations established or expanded in the last ten to fifteen years. It's related to so-called "Confederate Heritage" groups like the League of the South, and the Conservative Christian Coalition.

Cory Burnell, the individual quoted in the article referenced, is himself a member of the League of the South (LOS) and is openly associated with furthering its agenda. One of his contact addresses is in fact located on the LOS servers. The LOS is an organization that has as its stated mission "peaceful" separation of the Southern states from the federal union, completing through legal maneuvers what they believe was the rightful secession of the so-called Confederate states in 1860-61. They seek a nation of racial and religious hegemony as they define it.

From their position papers:

The goal of The League of the South is the cultural, social, economic, and political independence and well-being of the Southern People. We affirm the proud legacy of our predominantly Anglo-Celtic civilization with no apology. We lay proper claim to the political vision of America's Founders, to the heroic struggle of our Confederate ancestors against "consolidated" government, and to our underlying Christian heritage.

And a quote from Cory Burnell, writing for the LOS on January 29, 2004:

Deadlines make goals effective. We must put a plan into action and set a deadline for its completion. To my knowledge, no concerted national goal has been set for an ETI (Estimated Time until Independence). The only Southern nationalist organization I have found with an ETI is the South Carolina League of the South, which, according to state director Robert Hayes, is determined to be free of the union within 20 years. I think we can move this date closer to the present with a managed emigration.

Draw your own conclusions.

Mr. Burnell is a particularly odious individual. I have had the misfortune of crossing his path on various forums concerned with historical preservation and interpretation issues. He and people associated with his cause attempt to, and to a far too great extent, succeed in hijacking genuine historical discussion forums both online and in the larger public arena in order to advance themselves. Mr. Burnell is racist, homophobic, and a zealot of the most dangerous stripe. In accord with the LOS's more private tactical mission of advertising itself, he here has simply latched onto a current hot issue that is receiving national attention, as per his suggested tactics.

Please note that the article failed utterly to explore these connections.

You can learn more about the League of the South and Cory Burnell by googling.

7. How soon
can we round them up and get them the hell out of here? If they are really that unhappy living here, they should leave.

I don't get what is with these people and probably never will. No matter what they have, it is never enough. Instead of thanking God that they are priveleged enough to live in a country where freedom of religion has made it possible for their religion to thrive and flourish, they have to bitch that they are not allowed to force their beliefs upon everyone around them.

Good riddance!

8. Bring it on!
But I do wonder if the good citizens of SC have been apprised of their departure from the Union? But I forgot, They are Christians so their rights supersede everyone else's because they have been granted power by GOD. How silly of me.

9. Hell, I would support them all the way
They don't like us, we don't like them.

What could be the downside of them having their own pissant little country? Dunno about the rest of you, but personally I can't get them out of my country fast enough!

10. "Our Christian republic".....
Errr....I'm not too clued up on US history, but isn't there something about separation of Church and State, and freedom of worship?

Basically, this guy is going, "I hate anyone who isn't just like me and believes exactly what I believe", which is hardly a Christian standpoint IMHO.

However, we should be careful to avoid tarring all Christians with the same brush as this steaming great twat.
