Mother, Son Allegedly Plant Mouse In Soup At Restaurant
Mother, Son Allegedly Plant Mouse In Soup At Restaurant

POSTED: 10:50 am EDT June 2, 2004

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- A mouse in the soup has gotten a Virginia woman in some hot water.

Authorities charge Carla Patterson and her 20-year-old son Ricky planted the mouse in a bowl of soup at a Newport News Cracker Barrel restaurant. Prosecutors say the pair tried to extort money from the restaurant chain.

Carla Patterson claimed she had already eaten some of her vegetable soup when she scooped up the mouse in a spoon during an early Mother's Day lunch on May 8, the day before the holiday.

Carla Patterson and her son have been charged with attempted extortion and conspiracy to commit a felony. Authorities said they planted the mouse in the vegetable soup last month and wanted the chain to serve up $500,000.

1. I'd Rather Eat Mouse-Soup BEFORE I Would EVER Eat At Cracker Barrel...

Cracker Barrel management (and corporate) believe it's okay to fire someone for being gay (or even if they merely suspect them of being gay).

More whacko fundie bullshit.

2. I agree with you, Allen.
The only times I've eaten there have been times when the family, on one side or the other, has chosen Cracker Barrel, and they've been paying. I won't shell out to encourage the bastards. At least you can't accuse them of false advertising -- they put 'Cracker' right in the restaurant name!

I suspect they knew the mouse was put in by the customer because it wasn't one of theirs -- it didn't have their inspection sticker on it. They use a different breed of mouse in their soup. Meatier, probably -- they probably lock them in a matchbox and stuff grain down their throats with a tube.

4. No longer true, Allen.
Here's a link to Cracker Barrel's non-discrimination policy statement. The first paragraph reads:

It is Cracker Barrel’s policy, fully consistent with federal, state and local law, that no Cracker Barrel employee may discriminate against any Cracker Barrel guest or would-be guest on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.

I don't know when they changed it, but they did.

7. I had the same thought
They probably bought the mouse at a pet store and killed it.

I hope they go to jail for their BS prank.

8. My friend and her mom saved a mouse at a Venture store.
The poor little dude was stuck to one of those vile sticky pads and he was crying his heart out trying to get off the damn thing. Her mom (now RIP) picked up the pad and slowly and carefully pulled each little foot off the pad and put the mouse in her pocket. Then they went out to the parking lot and released him in the bushes.
