Gotta love this spam...
Dear U.S. Bank valued customer,

Due to concerns, for the safety and integrity of the online
banking community we have issued this warning message.

It has come to our attention that your account information needs
to be updated due to inactive customers, fraud and spoof reports.
If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and renew
your records you will not run into any future problems with the online service.
However, failure to update your records may result in your account suspension.
This notification expires on June 10, 2004.

Once you have updated your account records your internet banking
service will not be interrupted and will continue as normal.

Please follow the link below and renew your account information.

Oh golly...I'd better give them all my info before my "account" is suspended! While I'm there, I'll give them my credit card and social security numbers too!

2. Great bit on phishing this AM on Future Tense
http://www.publicradio.org/columns/futuretense/

"Phishing" is the practice of sending e-mails that falsely claim to be from a legitimate company, like eBay or Citibank, and direct you to a fake Web site where you're asked to enter your credit card number or other personal information. I've been receiving several phishes each day, which appear to be from eBay and its subsidiary, PayPal. They contain official looking logos, and read like this:

"Inactive customers are subject to restriction and removal of their accounts if they do not verify their accounts. Please confirm your details by clicking on the link below, which will take you to the verification form directly."

5. Hey! I can beat that! I have received e-mail from bank managers in
three different African countries telling me that a fellow countryman with the same last name as mine died intestate with no known relatives leaving a vast fortune in the millions, which would revert to the state if not claimed.

All three of these bank managers very generously offered to share the vast fortune in the millions with me if I would just send my bank account numbers and a "small" amount of "good faith" cash.

Sigh. I just didn't have that "small" amount of "good faith" cash, otherwise I would be swimming in money now.

Think maybe I'll stay away from Africa, though. It doesn't seem to be to healthy for folks with my last name.

esp. if a large server is jacked and used for spamming
