Poll question: Canon Digital Rebel or Nikon D-70?
Canon:

4-5.6 70-300 lens. (equiv to -480mm)
CMOS sensor (prone to noise)
100-1600 ISO
1/4000-30 second shutter
Lens can be set up to f36
6.3MP

Nikon:
3.5-4.? 70-300 Lens (equiv to -450mm)
CCD sensor (prone to purple fringing in high contrast areas, low noise)
200-1600ISO (no typo)
1/8000-30 second shutter
Lens can be set up to f29
6.0 MP

Canon is $300 cheaper.

I rather like both, and with some extra money coming in next month along with selling my current gear, I may as well move to digital now.

Thx!

1. Nikon's a great camera
but you're paying for the name. Canon has only gotten better in the last 10 years--that's my pick

9. The are both great products
But with the 200 lower limit for the Nikon, I'd go with the Canon, unless you don't need (or want) to use 100 spd.

2. What is your critical use?
Edited on Thu Jun-03-04 07:38 PM by Mika
I can't vote for both.

I like the CMOS units for bright light conditions

I like CCD units for subtle color detail

I like Nikon digitals the best so far, but my use is for close up/macro dental photography.

edit: forgot to mention. Nikon digitals seem a to have little bit slower operating system software.

7. Outdoor landscape photography, indoor pics of people at business functions
And macro close-up work.

I DO a lot of work in medium-light conditions, such as photographing fish...

Thanks you your input (and everybody's!)

3. Check This Web Site Out First
Someone managed to hack a Canon Digital camera. You may wind up with a better camera than you normally could afford.

6. Canon
But you knew I'd say that. :D

Actually, the speed of the Nikon is enticing. I think it has a very impressive buffer to allow you to shoot many shots quickly. But the cmos chip in the Canon is just wonderful. It doesn't have any problems with noise (I'll show you pics if you like, whatever "they" are talking about, it is so low as to be theoretical), it has an impecable "look" (great colors and skin tones), and it is soooooooooooo much more battery efficient than the ccd chips. That is a big deal actually, extra batteries are expensive, and a pain to keep track of.

You'll be ecstatic with either camera though. Both with the quality and the fact that you'll be able to shoot so much.

ps... it's really funny; Nikon has the d-100, which a year or two ago was an impressive deal. Now they are selling it for about 1500.00, while the d-70 is a few hundred cheaper. As far as I can see the d-70 is better in virtually all respects.

8. I'd love to see them (or snippets of original size 6MP images)!
I have a fetish for making big blow-ups of pics. High quality detail is a must. While I can easily (though manually) hide CCD purple fringing, even NeatImage's ability to remove noise isn't utterly perfect...

Thanks!

Pity the DRebel 300 isn't as sturdy as the predecessor, the 10D... and I wish it had spot metering and a more solid case (the thing is plastic!) but it's worth a shot. Who knows, maybe manual metering is worth the effort?

Apparently some people on the net don't like the Nikon D70 and with good reason, pertaining to quality... The Canon is acutally better.

I'll definitely try it, but on the other hand the next generation of DSLR might be worth waiting for...
