Product placement from Hell
Movie studios all have an office of Product Placement, and at Orion they have a very creative one.

I'm watching Robocop right now, and with all the "futuristic" brand names in this film, I only see four serious product placements: Ford, Shell, Kimble Laboratory Glassware and Komatsu forklifts.

Ford's okay; the Taurus is the official cop car of the Detroit Metropolitan Police Department, and cop cars are the Good Guys.

Shell? That's the gas station Emil blew up. Good or bad I don't know.

The other two are definitely bad--they're using Kimax flasks to package cocaine at Sal's Coke Factory, and a Komatsu forklift to move skids of blow around the building.

I've driven Komatsu forklifts, and they're fine, but after seeing that they're the choice of midwest coke lords, I think I'd stick with Toyota.

(BTW, forklift drivers: what's your favorite machine? I prefer the Raymond Fiddler 4-d reach truck because you can walk it down an aisle sideways.)

1. i haven`t driven any new forklifts
in along time but i was working today in a place with some new lifts. the one had all the controls in an extended arm rest-sweet-, the last forklift was a brand new clark yard forklift-lifted ten thousand pounds of steel with no trouble at all..the worst was a yard crane that had no brakes..you stopped it by reversing the gearbox..it was a real trick when you had a 2000 gallon tank swinging on the boom or when you moved something in the winter...

7. The most charming forklift ad I ever saw...
is here: http://www.toyotaforklift.com/about_us/product_focus/safety.swf

They are attempting to show you how their stability system keeps forklifts from flipping over.

They show you two forklifts in action. One is an old Toyota without their stability system (which is very good, and the machines it's on are real sweet to drive) and the other is a new Toyota with the system on it.

The test is to drive the forklift wide-open to a turn point, then turn the machine 180 degrees as short as you can. The older machine has what looks to be a half ton of steel on the forks, and the fork head is about ten feet off the ground. Naturally, this machine overturns when they attempt to turn it around.

The new machine has nothing on the forks and they're four inches off the ground. When they turn it around, the back end pops out a little bit but all four wheels stay on the ground.

We can title this video "how many OSHA violations can you find?"

5. Schwarzenegger's films are always bad that way
Total Recall was supposedly the most plug-filled movie in history at the time of its release. I've seen T3 and you're right, it's exceptionally bad.

3. Actually, it's called Production Resources at the major studios
and the "Art Department" at smaller production outfits. (I used to manage product placement for Palm.)

6. Ahhh, the wonders of euphemism.
I actually miss smart product placement like "Calvin Klein" in Back to the Future.
