1. Run disk scan, defrag and update your virus protection
and call us in the morning.

2. I would suspect spyware
there are two good free programs to remove that junk. Google for them:
AdAware
SpyBot Search and Destroy

you could also try doing a disk defragment, as well as maybe a registry rebuild (not an expert on that, but I think there are tools)

if your machine is running win 98 it's probably approaching the time for a clean reinstall

and remember - more RAM is the easiest and cheapest physical upgrade if your machine is slow (especially if you notice the slow is dramatic when launching/switching applications).

3. Also Check
To see how many programs you have running at the same time and shut down those you feel is unnecessary.

7. Task Manager
The poster may not know how to do this. In Win 2K, I access Task Manager by pressing Ctl-Alt-Del. If the machine is running slow I delete programs that load from start-up and aren't really in use. Just highlight the program and delete it from use. Then make sure these programs don't load unless you want them to.

4. How full is your disk?
Some versions of Windows gets weird and slow when there is too little free space on the disk.

Another reason why I use a Mac.

9. Try this out
I put this up on my new(ish) web site as a response to people who ask my advice on this kind of thing.

Still working on it, so it's not complete. But it may help.
