At what age would you like to die? How would you like to die?
I thought of this while reading the obituaries right now and scanning the ages of the people who have died.

When do you think you'll just look around and say enough. I've lived a good life and I'm ready to go? Do you want to die in your sleep or would you want to be conscious of the moment?

If you had a choice, when and how would you go?

1. Anytime after age 80 in my sleep.
I don't think I'd want to experience the moment of death while conscious.

6. Perhaps I'll live forever?
Maybe in 30-40 years time, biotechnology and medicine have come so far that they know how to "treat" the age genom? I live in the fantasy that I could live on forever, if I make my 60th birthday. ;)

28. I don't want to think about it
Seriously. Death is so out of our control and there's no way to plan for it. I could be dead tomorrow. I hope not, statistically it's unlikely, but it's possible. I guess I'm just trying my best to "seize the day" more instead of letting myself be controlled by fears of anything. Doesn't always pan out well, but hopefully I'm a better person for it.

Barring accidents (or world-wide destruction), I hope and expect to live at least another 50 years and I would like to die on my own terms in my own home.

34. I want to die before my body and/or mind goes..
I don't mean slowing down - I can handle that to a point... I mean I don't want to lay in a bed unable to move, in pain from arthritis etc.. or not knowing what the hell is going on around me. If that's when I'm 70, 80, 90 or whatever doesn't matter.

I don't care if I know it's coming or if it's in my sleep, though I prefer just going to sleep and checking out. But there is something to be said about knowing and saying your goodbyes.

If you had asked this question 20 years ago when I was almost killed in a car accident I would have said I wanted to live till I was 100, now I know more about quality of life and know that's ultimately what's it's all about.

35. Over 100
I should have done enough living by then. Perhaps I'll feel differently when I am that old, but I prefer to die in my sleep when I've accepted my death as inevitable but don't really expect it that particuliar night. Suddenly losing consciousness from full consciousness is bad enough. I would not want to suddenly die or be conscious of the dying process from full consciousness.

36. I'm thinking something unusual
Everybody seems to want to go in their sleep. That's boring. Death is an important event. It only happens once so I believe it should be memorable. I think I'd rather be awake and able to think "What the fuck?" just before I go. Freak accidents are good. Something like news reports of a runaway train and poorly constructed cantilever balcony killed some miserable bastard out walking the dog. Or the remains of the space shuttle come down on my head while I'm late for my job interview. Or an out of control van filled with antacid tablets spills its entire cargo in my stomach and I explode. That's what I want. People milling around talking to reporters going "Whoa, that could've been me, dude." This way, after I'm dead, I can be laughing at all the idiots trying to get on the television news mouthing "Hi mom."

Things to avoid. Elevators. Not that I am adverse to falling from a great height. However, if I do, I do not want to be locked in a metal box for the interim of the descent, unless it's one of those cool elevators where there's a window. If I know I'm going to die in the next eight seconds, I'd rather there be as little uncertainty as possible about exactly how many seconds I have left. I'd be extremely miffed if my last thought is "What the.." with no time for more.

I made those plans before reaching 30. I've since revised those plans. I'm now 41.

As for when and how, I don't really care so much, but I absolutely don't want to know it's coming! And I don't want to grow old and decrepit and need a home health aide to wipe my ass.

40. Why would you want to kill yourself at 45?
A former boyfriend had that motto — Die young and leave a good-looking corpse. When I went away for college, he had moved out West with this silly show band he was in that specialized in appealing to the senior set.

One day I got word that while he was out riding his motorcycle, he hit some sort of partial barricade in the road and it basically halved his body. Ouch! :-( In any case, he got his wish.

41. Only half his wish
Doesn't sound like his corpse would have been terribly good looking after that accident!

In answer to your question, at that time in my life I was convinced I would be miserable my whole life and I thought by that time my parents would be gone so I probably wouldn't leave behind anyone who would be deeply affected by my loss. (For the record, I'm 41 and they're still kicking!) As I say, my views have changed since then.

Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 10:28 AM by Bertha Venation
We Heidebrechts are extremely co-dependent. It's selfish because I am depriving my sisters of the right not to have to worry about my grieving for them. (Mrs. V. isn't nearly as co-dependent.)

Read it slowly... I barely understand it myself, but to a co-dependent it makes perfect sense.

My Dad is 67 and a real pack rat...he likes anything used and rusted. Not only does he have a two story house full of assorted tools, parts of parts, wood, and other items but he also owns a 40 acre farm with rusted equipment, vehicles and other shit everywhere. you know the Jeff Foxworthy joke about identifying a redneck, "when you mow your grass and you find a car?" that is my father. Well, I may sound gutless, but when he dies, I may be the one who has to go through all this stuff. I am dreading it and I wouldn't be surprised if it does drive me to drink. My father is a good person, but a crazy man.
