How do you convert square miles into miles? I live in Jacksonville, Florida, the largest city in total land area (841 square miles) in the 48 contiguous states. My younger brother has asked me to find out how large Jacksonville is in miles -- that is: regular, not square. Or is that even possible? Thanks.

Miles are one-dimensional -- linear. Square miles are two-dimensional.
Your brother might be asking how many miles across the city is (in whatever directions -- north to south, then east to west). That may be doable, but it can't be calculated based on the data you gave.

2. Take the derivative, maybe. |
|
Oh wait, a constant would only give you zero because that would be a straight line. Never mind.

Square miles is a two dimensional measurement, and miles is a linear, or one dimensional measurement.

4. A square 29 miles on each side covers the same area |

Maybe that's what he wants to know.
Edit: Get the number by taking the square root. 29 x 29 = 841.
