I can't take it

2. There, there....
I think we're all a little shocked. It ain't right, but those people are just letting off steam. I agree they'd be better off keeping their thoughts to themselves, but Skinner's letting them speak their mind, as he should.

I know things are a little rough and harsh at DU bit it will pass.

3. Do you like hockey? There's a hell of a good game on tonight.
Game 6 of the Stanley cup finals, and it's tied 2-2 after the 2nd period.

I also dropped in to the gungeon for awhile, and oddly enough it was a breath of fresh air after GD tonight.

I think I'll go hang out in I/P for awhile until the intermission is over.

14. escalating responses to the news of RR
with some moving to a level of advocation of hatred that to my read is not even a hair shy of outright dehumanizing violence inspiring hatred. In 2 1/2 years + at DU, I have never read anything like some of what I am reading tonight... met with high fives and amens... very extreme, very unusual - but reads as if it is normal. Thoughts of how peoples have been moved to carry out great massacres/genocides came to mind as I read the words... Cambodia, Bosnia, Russian Pogroms, Germany, Rwanda... hell the lynchings in this country, the extermination of Native Americans in this country. I have never over reacted in this way here before... just things seem to be escalating in a really over the top and frightening way.

7. I was watching a C-span callin earlier
and several callers sounded just like the hateful posts being seen here today.
I hope we don't get a polical backlash from this. C-span is "out there in the public" where millions of people can witness this crass behavior.

16. its not the crassness that frightens me
that irritates me - but heck - we just all respond differently. It was an escalation from crass to advocation of hatred - not just for Reagan but for a big swath of the American public... a level of hatred being expressed that is often the precursor to violence. It is like the hateful posts escalated into something even more sinsiter... but in a self-righteous sort of way (which in and of itself is rather disturbing.)

22. There is nothing worse than sensing that we may be losing our way.
I understand that.

If we become tied into the anger and disappointment and bitterness and so forth, our own sense of humanity may get lost.

We must maintain a commitment to "the basics" we all share as human beings: the hope and tolerance and love in the midst of a persistent struggle and suffering.

But, people always lose their way from time to time. Take heart, Salin.

20. there is potential for backlash
I see it as very dangerous to criticize this former president and victim of Alzheimer's disease. Whether you agreed or disagreed with his politics, he was undeniably very beloved and revered by millions of people in this country, even many Democrats. He did win 49 states in he relection.

Beyond that, how inappropriate is it to cheer the death of someone who's been suffering with a debilitating and torturous disease for the last ten years?

As the tacky expressions of glee from some DUers gets out onto the airwaves and newspapers, it is likely to alienate and infuriate many political moderates, and even some Democrats who liked Reagan, voted for him, and remember him fondly.

The behavior and comments I'm seeing on here tonight are just very depressing, discouraging, and eye-opening.

What have we become???

13. Intensely difficult and emotional times, I guess.
Some people cope by projecting (and we all do that from time to time *smile*).

I view it as mostly venting a great deal of anger and disappointment, resentment and pain. An anonymous cyber-board sort of invites that kind of catharsis.

19. I'm at work right now
So I've missed most of this, just popping in for a minute or two. What I've seen certainly hasn't been pretty.

One thing I will say for our side, at least we're debating the appropriate response, with voices weighing in on all sides.

You've been here long enough. This certainly is nothing out of the ordinary. When things broke, I used to be compelled to check into DU. Now I try to stay away for a day or two until things settle down a bit.

Perhaps there's a book or movie you could distract yourself with. If all else fails, there's always work. Hang in there. We're not ALL that bad. :-)

They are terribly upsetting and akin to listening to the reverse extreme of Limbaugh. Just,...don't go there.

Let's sit back and get a grip. This man did a lot of wrongs, yet he suffered a lot. I don't want to presume to determine someone else's Karma/fate. Too much work and energy involved.
