Ever fired an employee?
I never did, but man did I ever want to. I managed to put the right vibes and the girl quit. My dad however...he's a firing machine!

2. Well imagine it's not a single mother or something...
Imagine it's some teeny bopper chick with attitude who's always late and snaps her gum.

4. I know...even then I don't know if I could do it.
I'm too damn soft-hearted with those things...
This is why I am not cut out for the business world.

3. Yes!!!!

I can count the number of people I've fired on two hands, though. I was only in a position to do it for a couple years.

One of them was a guilty pleasure. She was completely worthless but thought she could get by with flirting. This just pissed me off more. One day, she got mad at me for making her clean something she didn't want to clean, and she threw a garbage can at me. "Can I see you in the office for a minute, please..." Oh, it was fun.

With most of the others I had lingering guilt because there weren't circumstances so blatant as the above. One was particularly sad. He tried so hard, but he just couldn't do simple addition in his head, which was a requirement of the job. I hadn't been the one to hire him, but I got the "pleasure" of letting him go. Not fun.

6. employees fire themselves
one of my bosses taught me that. It's true. Layoffs/downsizing etc. are different. Actual firing is something an employee brings on him/her self by their behaviors. In a decent company, management will have given prior notice to the employee as to the fact that their job is in jeopardy, and what they need to do to remain with the company.

7. I 've owned my own business for over 20 years.
One truism(sp)don't hire your friends or relatives.
In my first few years of business I hired a close personal friend as a manager....I just about slit my own neck before I finally fired him.
Although I have done it many times over the years....It is almost always a painful thing to do. (with a few exceptions).
