OK, but seriously: what IS "too young for you?" |
|
This whole, whatever you call it, "autumn-spring" romance thing? At what point are you really going to start to hear "S/he's too young for you?" Do people even care anymore?
I am of course talking about grown-ups, git yer mind outta the gutter. :)

Once I get outside that range, I find we just don't have enough of the same experiences to be able to communicate.

It's like, "No, I can pretend I'm not THAT old as long as I have a young hottie on my arm."
Give up. You ARE that old.
Now in response to the original question, I once dated someone ten years younger than myself, and it worked because he was very mature and I was very immature. :-)

That seems about right to me. My first wife was six months older than me, and my second wife was three years younger. Both of those marriages ended in divorces that THEY initiated. Mrs. CO Liberal and I have been together for 12 years now (married for 11), so I thing the age diference is just fine...

I don't date anyone the same age or younger as my oldest child (who is 26). I'm 43. I normally date younger than my age group because I don't have anything in common with most of the guys my age. And for other reasons we will not go into, as no sex threads are allowed. ;)

9. I'd have to say that the swing would be 10 years +/- |
|
So, given that I'm 41, 31-51 is the correct range. On the other hand, when I was 18 I was with a 43-year-old (which seemed ancient to me at the time... now seems young, ugh).

12. I have conflicting thoughts on that....... |
|
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's all relative.
I'm in my mid-40's and I'm still rocking. (And married.) But I wouldn't really want to date a much younger woman if I wasn't married.
However, I can't think of any good reasons why not.
I suppose if I were single and it were just a fling, I'd have no restrictions. But if I were starting over for some reason, I'd have a couple of restrictions, the first being 'No Kids', so that might mean that I'd prefer seeing someone closer to my age.

Edited on Tue Jun-08-04 09:19 AM by Guy_Montag
It's 16 (straight), 18 (gay) here, so I that's the theoretical limit, but I think it would be weird to go out with someone younger than about 21. I don't think we'd have much in common, on the other hand I've had a one night stand with a woman 20 years older than me. That was good!
On edit: I'm 27 if anyones interested.

I think that in Alaska, Arkansas and Alabama the age of consent is 16 with no restrictions.
Here in Illinois the age is 17, but 18 if it's a student/teacher relationship.

14. I'm 28, and I honestly don't think I'd date someone more than |
|
a few years younger.
I actually had a conversation with my mom about this once (keep in mind I'm married, so it was a wierd conversation). She said she'd not even consider it an issue if I dated someone 26-35, and would probably "approve" (inasmuch as I'd seek her approval) of maybe 23-39 (but not 40).
My own comfort zone would probably be 26-40 or older. I tend to relate better to people older than me than to people younger (maybe it's the whole Gen X thing -- I could comfortably date within my generation).
That's not to rule out a fling with someone significantly younger or older, so long as it's legal and both parties know it's just a fling.
And these are generalities, anyway. I talk about ages and types and such, but if I found myself single and dating, who knows?
And, of course, this is just my preference -- I don't care what others do. Again, so long as everyone's a grown up and everyone's on the same page regarding expectations, etc.

Intense emotion and good communication skills can overcome a lot. Not everything, but a lot. I guess the better part of wisdom would have you looking down the road a bit and guaging what the possible outcomes could be, but I don't think there's a one size fits all answer for this. I've known some age differences where I think it matters, and some where I thought it pretty obviously didn't.
I do think the university is pretty clearly uninterested in my dating my students. But I acknowledge that it's made me feel pretty good that a few of the students have actually considered it anyway.

"Too young" for me isn't a bioligocal distinction but an emotional one.
When I was 29 I dated a 19 year old -- it was great! We had a lot in common and related beautifully.
When I was 19 I dated a 36 year old -- that wasn't bad either.
And I've dated men my own age or within a few years and felt like I was dating an emotionally retarded, teenage horn-dog. :)

I said to him, "Ernie, when I am eighty I shall marry me a twenty-year old boy. And let me tell you something Ernie: twenty GOES INTO eighty a helluva lot more than eighty GOES INTO twenty!"

I am only 26. I don't think that if I were single that it would be wrong for me to date an 18 year old, but many young men are immature. I guess that it would depend on maturity. I think that if someone is middle aged and has children, it would be best not to have a serious relationship with someone close to your children's age. My uncle ran into problems dating a 19 year old when his oldest daughter was 15, both in terms of how her friend's parents reacted and the girlfriend's inability to get any respect from the girl who considered her to be on a peer level.

Who knows maybe she will take you up on it and then you won't have to have that long distance relationship any longer right?
Also, she might think that you are loaded and she might be looking for a sugar daddy and who knows maybe her daddy wouldn't mind if you are loaded.

Funny because most people mistake me for being under 30 myself, but I'm not (young face, old soul). I have lead a very responsible life for a long time and to an extent, that's who I am and will always be. I'd want someone with some life experience and is most definitely done with the nightly party phase of life. Not that there can't be fun in moderation, but moderation is the key (with substances anyway, parties with me are another story).
For the most part, I'd prefer someone probably 35-47 who's lived a little and knows a little better than some young 'un.

I always love the concept of perputuating further muffin munching throughout the world. Enjoy munching muffins or having your muffins munched. One way or another, it's all good. :7

59. I'm 47 and desperate...Anyone over 21 would be fine. |

Gawd, has it come to that? When I was 21, I was dating 38-y-o's. when I was 30, there was a 45-y-o, when I was 40, another one was 54...
Now I'd settle for anyone who was of legal age and just wanted to get naked....

67. Younger is a difficult concept for me to wrap my mind around. |
|
I've only ever dated one person younger than myself, by a few years. It was okay, but he made a far better friend than he did a SO.
Mostly, I date people MUCH older than myself, and have ever since I was in high school. It's not an "on purpose" thing - it simply works out that way. Oddly, I seem to have more in common with people closer to my parents age...
Im 31, last (or current and dead/dying) relationship was with a 45 year old man, currently seeing a 49 year old.
Age is NEVER an issue in any of my relationships either. I'm never treated as "the young one" - we are always on a completely level playing field. I dunno - I've always been an odd girl. :D
