Football fans: What's your favourite and least-favourite NFL stadium?
I have a HUGE interest in stadium architecture, and I've worked on school projects regarding stadiums in the past. And I'm wondering what football fans around here think are the best and worst NFL stadiums.

Now even though I'm a huge Vikings fan, I'm still completely unbiased on this issue (and really, who would chose the Metrodump as the best anyway?). And I have to say my favourite NFL stadium has to be Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. It's a newer stadium, but it was built to look humble and down-to-earth, like the city it represents. It wasn't built to look like a shopping mall or a convention centre. It incorporated the blue-collar Pittsburgh ethic into its design. And it looks very beautiful, too.

My least-favourite would have to be Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. It just looks like a giant monolithic edifice. There's something very aesthetically unpleasing about it. Maybe it's that mid-1970's exterior design.

So what's your best and worst NFL stadiums?

13. I agree
Lambeau is GREAT. I worked on it when it was being renovated and I am proud of the work that the other tradesmen and myself did on that beautiful football stadium.

Worst: Metro Dome, not because the despised ViQueens play there, because it is a TOILET! Implosion is to good for that dump.

P.S Go Pack

5. Never been there --
I was only at Mile High once, in 1993 (when the Pope came to Denver, CO). They had a "welcoming rally" at Mile High. Thought it was a crummy place.

No Dome and living Grass? Love it.

Dome and astroturf? Hate it.

When I was a kid, the football games in terrible weather were my favorites.

I also vastly prefer them to be named after people, not companies. And once named, don't change 'em.

12. Sick of the corporate names too...
...Enron is the shining example of why this is so unnecessary. I mean, Candlestick is Candlestick. I still have yet to remember all the new ones.

I can't say I have a favorite. But I do know enough that I truly hated Veterans Stadium.

23. Sun Devil..the smell of a bad state fair gone bad and 115 in the seats
Has gone through at least four renovations. The only stadium I know of where the some of the newly installed, badly needed bathrooms were converted back to snack bars. A small river of unknown origin and contents flows in the center of the main concourse, wafting smells that could gag a maggot in the sick heat. The seats, metal of course, cause 3rd degree burns.

17. Lincoln Financial Field is awesome.
Took all the best things about the new stadiums and combined them. Great sightlines and accommodations anywhere in the building, the place is a gem. The only thing I don't like are the open ends, the crowd noise is less than it was at The Vet and thus less intimidating.

Of the stadiums I've visited recently, Giants Stadium is the worst because of it's age and terrible field but it's still not that bad.

18. Old Foxboro stadium was the worst. New Gillette stadium is the best.
Old Foxboro was so bad that at times, before the game, then owner Billy Sullivan would send his staff to all the restrooms and flush the toilets at the same time to get the drainage working.

The Metrodome has to be the WORST designed sports facility in history. And I've been there countless times. It was designed for concerts and monster truck rallies, not sports. It is planned obsolesence summed up in a stadium. People said that it looked like a piece of crap when it opened 23 years ago. See the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, ND for another example of this phenomena.

And BTW, both stadiums were designed by the same firm - Ellerbe Becket of Minneapolis.

33. jax is nice...esp. if you get in the touchdown club sections.....
nice big screens, easy access to food and drinks, short restroom lines and air conditioned inside, but you have to travel a long ways if you want to smoke. the best thing is that i get to watch the jags get ass-whooped by the titans and colts, and watch my texans live....

29. i love Heinz Field.
It's weird, I really hate corporations naming stadiums. I was a fan of Three Rivers Stadium cause it had a Pittsburgh-y feel to it. But then, I feel that Heinz Field, though named after a corporation, definetly sounds and looks like it belongs in Pittsburgh.

30. Best: Met Stadium, Bloomington MN
I'm a huge Vikings rube, too. Have been since I was a kid in the 1970's. That place was magical in the wintertime, with Bud, Fran Tarkenton, Chuck Foreman, and the Purple People Eaters.

The Metrodome is the worst. Saw one game there, and it was fun, but nothing like the old Met was.

Build a new stadium now!!!

32. New Soldier Field is the worst, Orange Bowl was the best
Whoever approved that flying saucer in Chicago should be dropped from the highest cloud, directly overhead, so his last vision can be the atrocity he created.

Hardly a coincidence that both the longest college winning streak and longest NFL winning streak came in the metallic house of horrors Orange Bowl. Especially in the diabolical closed end, you literally can't hear a thing the person next to you is saying. The Dolphins forfeited probably one win per year when Joe Robbie insisted on building his own antiseptic cement joint out in the northwest Dade hinterlands near Calder Race Track.

34. Lambeau Field
Yes I am biased, but in reality, there isn't a bad seat in the house. It was built for football and nothing but football so it is by design that the seats are that way. GO PACKERS! Just thought I'd get that in early. Worst? Well, I haven't been to many NFL stadiums, but the old Soldier Field was really bad. I think out of about 80,000 seats, 25 or 30,000 were sideline seats and the rest were all end zone seats and a long way from the field to boot. The Metro Dome is an abomination. Saw a baseball game up there a few years ago and that plave has no soul. just a big nothing.
