What was #1 on the Billboard R&B/Soul chart the day you were born?
Post your DOB and I'll provide the title and artist for ya!

In my case....

March 20, 1966: Wilson Pickett, "634-5789 (Soulsville, U.S.A.)."

By the way, the Billboard R&B chart debuted on October 24, 1942. So if you were born prior to that, I'm afraid you're outta luck!

18. Dec. 27, 1968: Marvin Gaye, "I Heard It Through The Grapvine."
Marvin was #1 on the pop charts that week, too.

And the #1 soul record on March 16, 1968 was Otis Redding's "Dock of the Bay." Had Finnfan been born just one day later, it would've been Aretha Franklin's "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone."

Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 10:18 PM by LowerManhattanite
My dad knew Brook (they were both from North Carolina and my dad sang with Clyde McPhatter and Jackie Wilson as a member of Billy Ward and His Dominoes) pretty well. We wore Brook's records out at home as my dad was partial to his fellow Carolinian Baritone. the song's a classic Clyde Otis shuffle/blues number with some strings and an especially warm, deep, honeyed lead by Brook. The Soul and Brit explosions really hurt his career as he was the king of the sweet "cocktail" soul style of the early sixties (alá Jerry Butler and Arthur Prysock).

It's a killer side!

114. Yep!
Joe Lamont. He was with the group when it formed and sang on Sixty-Minute Man with Clyde and Bill Brown. He was there when Jackie replaced Clyde (and the group swooned a bit---but their "St. Theresa of the Roses" brought 'em back) and stayed through until around 1957 when Wilson left.

Pop wasn't around for the group's smash version of "Stardust" (in '58 I think), but he knew the lead singer on "Stardust", named Mumford (I forget his first name, but dad always called him "Singin" Mumford---who was a wonder in the studio, but nervouslly wandered off-key on stage according to pop).

The stories he told me! Wow!

115. You might want to check out this webpage of mine.
It's a rank-ordered list of my 200 favorite R&B vocal group (or "doo-wop") records of 1948-59. Several of them are by the Dominoes. Unfortunately, they all predate your dad's joining the group, but you still might find the list worth a read!

Jackie Wilson's successor in the Dominoes was Eugene Mumford of Durham, NC. His first group, formed in 1939, was a gospel aggregation called the Selah Jubilee Singers. They eventually morphed into the R&B group the Larks, who just happen to have the #1 song on my vocal group 200!

Anyway, here's the URL for that page:

53. Sad to say, you're out of luck.
Billboard did not publish an R&B chart from November 1963 - January 1965.

It's not hard to see why. As the '50s gave way to the '60s, rock 'n' roll had thoroughly integrated popular music, to a point at which the Billboard R&B top ten regularly included non-R&B songs. Among the pop confections that went to #1 R&B in 1963: "Hey Paula," "I Will Follow Him," "It's My Party," and "Sugar Shack."

The good folks at Billboard must've figured that the R&B chart had become redundant, and gave it the old heave-ho in late November of '63. Thankfully, the magazine reinstated the chart for the week ending January 30, 1965. And the new chart truly reflected what was happening in soul music!

Now, having said all that, I still don't want to leave johnnie in the lurch. As such, I'll give you the #1 R&B song in Cashbox for August 22, 1964: "Where Did Our Love Go?" by the Supremes.

85. Astounding!
But...it also notes the crossing over of what was then R&B into the pop milieu. Note that the period the chart was dropped also parallels the meteoric rise of the "Motown Sound". A batch of the Supremes 12 #1 hits fell into that gap (Come See About Me, Baby Love, Where Did Our Love Go), as did the Temps and Four Tops breakthrough records. (Martha and the Vandellas as well)

What a time that was!

I know Hound Dog came out that year, but not sure it was considered R&B, and I think it came out later in the year...

This is the one the Righteous Brothers redid - the one in Ghost?

75. Yup, it's the same song the Righteous Brothers remade.
In 1955, there were actually four versions of "Unchained Melody" on the pop charts. Along with Al Hibbler, there was Roy Hamilton, Les Baxter & His Orchestra, and June Valli. Plus, the doo-wop group Vito & The Salutations charted with a wild-assed uptempo remake in 1963, while the Sweet Inspirations came out with a soul version in '68. Elvis also recorded "Unchained Melody" in the '70s.

80. Hibbler is one of the great forgotten voices in music!
His version of the Joyce Kilmer poem "Trees" is also one of the great vocal gymnastic workouts of the R&B/Pop era. Right up there with Jackie Wilson's "Danny Boy".

Have mercy!

That was why their music careers came and went so quickly. They had to keep requesting special leaves from the Marines so they could go on tour. Apparently, the Corps didn't take too kindly to that!

JOE SIMON
Power Of Love
(Kenny Gamble/Leon Huff/Joe Simon)

Whoa-yeah, baby, sugar
Honey, sweet darlin', I'm yours
Oh, yes I am

Every since that day we met
My whole life been full of joy and happiness
Oh when you kiss me it burns to my soul
Seven days later, my body I can't control

You got (power in your kiss)
You got (power in your twist)
You got power, power, power
Oh-ooooooh!

Oh I love ya
I tell you I just can't help myself
Oh when I hear you talk and I see you walk
That make me know I don't want nobody else
You got (power in your walk) oh yeah
You got (power in your talk) uh-huh
You got power, power, power
Oh baby, power over me

I love it when you love me
(Love the way you love me)
I love the way you call my name

All my life I wanted someone
To love an understand
Now we're together, listen to me honey
My lonliness has gone away
I swear I think I'm
Think I'm able to carry on, yeah

You got honey in your kiss
And I'm glad of that
You got honey in your twist
And I'm glad about it

Sometime, bab-ay
I wanna scream about your love
Sometimes, bab-ay
I just a-wanna say oh, I'm glad
I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad

You got power in your kiss
(Power in your kiss)
You got power in your twist
(Power in your twist)
You got power in your walk
(Power in your walk)
You got power in your talk
(Power in your talk)
Power with your best
You got it, you got it
You got it baby
Sometime I wanna squeeze you
...& fade

97. I'm afraid we've hit a snag.

Now, having said all that, I still don't want to leave angee_is_mad in the lurch. As such, I'll give you the #1 R&B song in Cashbox for December 14, 1964: The Supremes' "Come See About Me."
