Windows
The actual, open-them-up-for-fresh-air kind. I'm trying to price how much it would cost me to build the kind of house I want, and wonder if there are any good on-line resources that will provide info on sizes, shapes, prices, etc., of windows. Lowes.com just doesn't offer much information, neither does homedepot.com, and besides, I'd rather support a non-enormous-chain store.

Anyone have any suggestions?

1. check some of the vinyl window manufacturers...
Harvey Industries is one company
Anderson is another

They might be better suited to help you.

3. Andersen makes good windows.
http://www.andersenwindows.com/

All but two of the windows in our house are Andersen, and they work very well keeping the weather and the noise outside.

The two that are not Andersen - I installed a couple of Viking windows in the living room. They're vinyl cased, so they're not spectacular to look at but the price was great and they're double hung so you can open the top or bottom. Installation was a cinch.

I believe Viking is owned by Pella...

5. Build a dungeon...
Just create a walkway and staircase leading down to a subterranean domicile without windows. You'd not have to spend much on cooling the place and you'd have a conversation-home. If you really desire the sun then you could always incorporate skylights.
