I think I caught his original Tonight Show and have a vague rememberance of the controversy when he left.........
Didn't know he died.
RIP Jack Paar.

7. Actually, Paar was third. |

Ernie Kovacs was the second host of the Tonight Show, but turned out to be too weird. He only hosted for a few months.

6. I Liked Parr...Best Guests... |
|
Charlie Weaver, Dodi Goodman, Alexander King...Hugh Downs was sidekick announcer. He came back later for another try with Peggy Cass as announcer and it didn't work.
Knew Johnnie would be new host. Used to watch Whom Do You Trust with Ed, but when he took over, I was big Steve Allen fan for several years, then switched to Johnnie. Now can't stand Leno and focus on Dave...

8. An intellectual. Very rare on the tube now. |

He had a bit of an ego, but he also recognized that he did and was a master of self-deprecating humor. I enjoyed his show.
Many of his guests were so-called highbrows who came there to let their hair down. There was one priceless segment about baths versus showers. A lot like some of the threads here in the lounge.
For me, it was a little like being an onlooker at the old Algonquin Round Table.
I bet most of you are way too young to remember either.
