A Hummer totaled my Nissan today. With me in it! |
|
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 05:07 PM by Mika
Narrow street waiting for a light, I was 2nd in line, when a Hummer ripped a right turn at the imtersection onto the street and hit/swiped my Altima on the drivers side from front to rear. Took off the roof.
Its a good thing I saw it coming, because I lurched/leaned over to the passenger side.
No side air bag could withstand it.
I'm feeling really lucky to be alive.
I now need a car. :-(
BTW, the Hummer needed to be towed too w/a busted strut.
On edit: let me just say that the a-hole driving this disgusting vehicle was near shock at having almost killed me. I really couldn't seriously berate someone who was crying in apologies and wishing he never had the damn monster. He has full coverage insurance, as do I (Florida is a "no fault" state"), but the Blue Book value of a 2001 Altima can't be that much. I haven't checked yet.

3. OUCH, Sorry to hear that |
|
And glad to hear that you're OK. At least on consolation is that the Hummer owner probably has very good insurance, milk it for all it is worth, ie, get a nice rental while your car is being repaired.
Glad to see that you came out unhurt, have a  by all means!

Bruises on my left thigh and shoulder. My left ear is ringing from the sound of an engine roaring right in it.
Hummers should be illegal. Period.

Even if you don't seem to be hurt that badly... soft tissue injuries are hard to diagnose and they may take 12 -48 hours to fully manifest!
If you have ANY chest pain or head pain, go NOW to an ER. I hate to sound like an alarmist, but you need to do this considering the lateral forces involved in any sort of collision.

Who could live with himself when he drives a car capable of killing someone in a minor accident?
On edit: And I was in a bad mood this morning because some 20-something chick on a cell phone in a mere SUV ran into my lane.

11. I hope you've seen a doctor -- in case you have an injury you don't know |
|
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 05:26 PM by Vitruvius
about. Adrenaline & psychological shock can sometimes mask broken bones, gunshot wounds, etc -- ask any war veteran. Or you may have a non-obvious injury. (A relative of mine almost bled out from a ruptured spleen after an auto accident; he was sure he was OK, and it was only a small rupture, but it bled-and-bled-and-bled... Thankfully it was caught in time.)
2-to-1 you're OK, but GET YOURSELF CHECKED -- and get any injuries treated NOW. You owe it to your health, yourself, and your family.
And congratulations on your narrow escape. Good luck.
Vitruvius
P.S: W.r.t some of the other advice: a big lawsuit can consume several years of your life; they're an appealing fantasy, but should be considered only if absolutely necessary.

17. Make sure you sue GM!!!! |
|
If you sue, make GM a co-defendant for making a ballistic vehicle that is unsafe to all other drivers!!!!
Honestly, Hummer sales have been lagging. I don't think they'll make them for much longer.

Second that - I was in a similar accident 9 years ago. |
|
GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM. I was broadsided on the driver's side (like you were) by a drunk driver going 40 mph, and was lucky to survive it. I was only bruised & scraped up (and shaken up) and refused medical attention at the site, turned down an ambulance ride.
By the time the tow truck driver (who was good enough to give me a lift) dropped me off at my parents' house, I was dizzy and vomiting. Subsequent trip to the ER revealed a mild concussion, a couple of cracked ribs, and a bruised sternum. I was in pretty serious pain for a couple of weeks, and still have chronic headaches from the injuries. You may feel fine now, but nobody takes a hit like that without being a little messed up. Best of luck to you.

12. Mika, I'm so glad you're all right. |
|
I drive a small Jeep Liberty, and I'm terrified of Hummers. I can't imagine what it looked like seeing that monster come at your Altima.
No surprise the Hummer was disabled - a Ford pickup in Anchorage broadsided one a few months back (sorry, I didn't save the picture) and totalled the Hummer. The truck had about $2K in damage.
Did you go get checked out medically? Don't sign ANYTHING with the insurance folks until you do!
Have a cold one on me

I too drive a Nissan Altima. I was following a Hummer down a county road and the asshole slowed down for a little uneven assphalt!!!!
This is a vehicle that's supposed to drive through 3 feet of water right. And you slow down for a few surface irregularities!!!!
Every time I go over that ... I FLY!!!!! A little rough ... no problem.
Every time I see a Hummer, they're doing something dumb like that. And guess what ... Bush has a TAX SUBSIDY for very large vehicles. So we will get to see who the REAL ASSHOLES are!!!!

It's a good thing you are quick thinking and it makes me realize how dangerous driving is. I remember when I was visiting my brother in Naples, Fl and driving down Allegator Alley and some young girl's car went out of control and crossed over and totalled my rental car. When she hit me, I was already over on the shoulder because I saw her coming.

Holy crap. Glad you're well.
P.S. You're going to be sore as all hell tomorrow. Even without injury. Your body braced every muscle before impact, and you'll feel it when you wake up. Take some Advil.

Thanks to everyone.
I'm OK. I know the symptoms of shock, broken bones and internal injury, etc (FYI, I'm a Dr).
I just got the crap scared out of me. If I had been talking on a cellphone or f-ing with a CD I would be dead.
A lot fewer pro Cuba posts here on DU if that had happened. ;-)
I took Advil as soon as I got home, but I know I'll need it tomorrow and the next day.
The g-damn front of a Hummer is higher than the side rear view mirrors on an older model Altima. It just tore thru the front and side pillars. The side airbag deployed out of the left side of the driver’s seat which is useless against a Hummer.
I have NO idea what car to get next.

Make sure you see a doc, though, just to be sure. These way-too-close calls can also cause a mild depression a few days/weeks later -- watch out for that, too.
