He is mentally ill...such behavior is not normal
We're no further ahead than when we chained the mentally ill to the wall in Bedlum Sanitorium in England in the 1800s and let the tourists in for a gander and a laugh.
Now we throw them in prison and laugh as they are murdered.
Civilization...faugh!

2. I understand your point |
|
Edited on Sat Aug-23-03 08:58 PM by Chuckup
I'm not laughing, in fact, I'm more concerned about the children that will go through life seriously damaged because of the actions of one person, a person in the position of trust.
You call it a mental illnes, I'm not a doctor, so I cannot say this person did in fact have a mental illness.
If you base your decison diagnose this person with a mental illness because of his sexual preference for children, do you also consider homosexuality a mental illness?
I think before we offer tears to this child molestor, we should consider his actions against young innocent children, children that were placed in his care, and the actions the Catholic Church who attempted to cover-up for too many years.
Does the Catholic Church have a mental illness as well?

3. I am disturbed at the rejoicing of a peron's murder, pedophile or not. |
|
Human beings are raped and killed in prison, and some of them are innocent of the crimes they were accused of.
It's pretty base to say that a murder is somehow great.

5. I don't agree with murder |
|
of any kind. I don't agree with the murder in this particular case. My comment, "They get taken care of", was made for a reason.
In many cases, the person that committed the murder while in proison was once a victim of a pedophile.

8. I have worked with children who are rapists themselves |
|
And ALL!! of them were sexually abused. You don't wake up one day and rape someone. You are raped as a child, not treated, then you go through puberty. Psychologically (and you really have to understand this) people are very programed by pre-pubescent sexual encounters, and often the untreated sex victim will upon puberty act the encounter out.
If you notice, rape victims of a serial perpetrator all cluster in the same sex and age. The sex of the victim is important but not determinate, but the age is indicative most of the time of the age when the perpetrator was himself molested.
So, I would bet $100 that this priest was HIMSELF molested by an authority figure or priest even, and then sought out a position of access and cover, for that is what he learned from his formative sexual experience.
People need to understand that rapists are the price a society pays for not having a thorough mental health care and child protective services on the par that they need to given 1 in 5 women will be raped in their lifetime.(and I suspect more)
It is easy to hate on child molesters and rapists, and fear is justifiable, but blind hate for these people only serves to perpetuate the shame of being molested, and the ignorance of how we can even make a dent in this epidemic.

11. In that case, would it be fair to say that |
|
all of these priests that commit these acts against young kids are part of a chain of events, all connected to the Catholic Church?
Do RICO laws fall in effect anywhere here?
Who knows, it's probable that the percentage of kid-fuckers in the Catholic Church is the same as kid-fuckers in the rest of society, in this case hypocrisy adds to the mix. "Come to Church, the place to heal your heart" is a sign I passed earlier today on a bike ride, perhaps it should say "Come to church, where your chances of being molested are no different than anywhere else."

6. I don't see any rejoicing here. |

You must be reading another thread.
Murder is never a good thing. Although, I have a feeling the good father's meeting with his maker will not be pleasant for him.

There is a joking tone to "What happens to pedophile priests..."
"They get taken care of."

12. that may be true, but it's a little 'after the fact' don't you think? |
|
Yeah, he could be roasting his toes over the coals of Satan's bbq right now, but what good does that do for the kids he molested?
While I'm not glad to see him gone, I could really care less, rotting in prison for the rest of his years would have been a better punishment. Death is the easy way out.

14. True...he got the easy path to his maker. |

This is the reason I favor life in prison to the death penalty. Let 'em stew on their crimes and the pain they cause...

....may he(the priest) rot in hell, if there is one!
No tears shed here.
Though I will consider some compassion for the padre only when others could convince me that Hitler was a victim too.
Otherwise, fuck him.
p.s. that inmate deserves to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. His act might have been just, but the threat of blind vigilantism run wild is something that we must avoid.
Imteresting that a lot of Freepers are divided over this!

He wasn't clear on the differences between "Pray" and "Prey."
I sincerely hope he was made aware of the differences in Prison before he left in a physical manner and can explain his actions to the satisfaction to his "maker" after the fact.

16. I think Cardinal Law was more deserving |
|
No doubt what Geoghan did during his priesthood was horrid, but as noted above he was mentally ill. Law knew what was going on, and put Geoghan in a dangerous situation again and again. What's Law's excuse?
As far as I know, Cardinal Law is still a free man.

15. Prisoners have thier standards |
|
And they don't like Pedophiles. That's why Jeff Dahmer was killed; not because he was a sick bastard who murdered and cannabilized his victims, but because some of the victims were children.

17. How do the prisoners hear about what new inmates have done? |
|
Keeping the criminals free of all that lovely cable TV and radio and newspapers would be a good start, DUH... they're there to serve a sentence, not get amenities the rest of us can't bloody afford...
What you said really wasn't funny, though the molester got what he deserved. (Though not by a priest, I was molested as a child. It's very distrubing to have been mistreated like that and reading the article's graphic detail stirred some memories. :-( )
Hell, all the bastards should be released and we good people locked up with the cable tv and free medical care and room'n'board. That's how I feel these days, unless society wakes up and decides to improve itself. But this is America post-1979, so that won't happen.
