After hearing all of the Reagan coverage I have been wondering what the hell is a Gipper? Using my own logic I figure it has something to do with movies.
I remember watching the Stanley Cup in Calgary. I think it was game 5. One of the fans held up a sign that said, "Win one for the Kipper." It was referring to Miika Kippersoff (sp?)
After the game I lurked at Free Republic to try to find some outrage. I didn't find any. Of course the software there sucks and I didn't know what I was doing. It is hard to lurk there.

6. I think Gipper is a poor orphan boy in the hospital |

when big sports heros like Babe Ruth went to hospitals to visit sick children, people would say "hit one out, for the gipper". If, I remember correctly.

Played football for Notre Dame in the early 1920's. He was a Michael-Jordan-type franchise player. He died while still in college from quinsy (a strep throat complication) or something.
I think the story goes that the telling of his death and final wish "win one for the Gipper" was the best halftime pep talk the ND coach (Rockne) had in his mojo bag. I think Reagan played Gipp in a Rockne movie or something like that.

9. 3 characters -- 2 were fictional |
|
George Gipp was a real Notre Dame football star who died when he was a player.
Ronald Reagan played the fictional role of George Gipp in the movie Knute Rockne All American.
Later, Ronald Reagan played the fictional role of a president referred to as the "Gipper," whose sunny optimism belied the dark consequences of his policies.
