Netflix: Any DU subscribers? |
|
Is it worth 22 dollars each month? Any hassles? Ease of use? Selection?
I refuse to rent at Blockbuster for very justifiable reasons. How's Netflix?

1. Netflix is great! (I am not a shareholder!) |

The only bad thing is that spontaneity of movie selection can be hurt, but you know that going in. In LA movies get mailed to me very fast. I can have three movies at one time. When I need another I need to mail one back. Generally it takes two days for them to acknowledge receipt of a movie I mail back and one more day for them to mail the new one to me so there is a three day turnaround. On your first movie, you will get it the next day if you are close to a distribution center like LA. Also, with my busy schedule, I was always the type to pay lots of late fees, and this never happens again!

The final straw for me was Blockbuster double charging my credit card for the PRICE of three movies (not the rental fee, the PURCHASE PRICE) that they said I had not returned. We went to the shelves, and, lo and behold, the movies were on the shelf.
Thank god I have a GREAT credit card company that took blockbuster to task for this.

4. I've been pretty happy with them |
|
I get about a 3 day turn around from the day I send the movie out till the time I get a new one most times. The main thing I love about Netflix is that they have tons of documentaries and TV Shows available for rent. I mainly get BBC and PBS Docu's these days and I have been very satisfied with the service. That said I'm sure it depends on how close you are to a distribution center etc..

I just started subscribing..mostly renting documentaries, which is really the reason I subscribed, because Blockbuster has no documentaries and the local library selection was poor.
I started subscribing in mid to late May and I've already had 9 DVDs sent to my house, so I think it's worth the $$. And, like others have said, they usually arrive the day after they're shipped.
Thumbs up from me.

And a lot cheaper than Blockbuster, plus you can keep the movies as long as you want with no late fees. If you watch 3 movies a week, it is worth the price. And they have a huge selection. As soon as a movie is out on DVD, Netflix has it.

I usually buy several DVDs each month because that is the only way I can see them, since I refuse to use Blockbuster. The more I think about it, the more I realize this indeed would save me money.

7. it all depends on mail service in your area |
|
netflix dvds seem to have a high tendency to disappear in the mail. they'll forgive you something like one disappearing a year, but after that they'll charge you for the missing movie.

I drop movies in the mail and within two days, I have replacement movies. If I know I won't be using it for a month or so, I just cancel and easily reactivate my account later on.

10. Been with it since 1999 |

Got a trial membership with our first DVD player and have been quite happy with it ever since. The selection is vast, dead-easy to use, no hassles. We've had maybe one DVD lost and got a couple that were unplayable; reported those and new ones shipped out ASAP.
Turn-around varies depending on how close you are to one of their centers (in-laws in Florida get new movies in two days average--we have about a four day turn around).

Not sure how to check how close you are, but even a 4-5 day turn around is decent unless you're a really heavy viewer!

We don't have any independent rental places in the area anymore, so I adore Netflix for their variety. (Although I can't figure out why in the world they don't have Elton John's "One Night Only" DVD, when they have far more obscure titles.) I believe we have a distribution center in this county, so my turnaround time is very quick.

|
And the variety--last night I searched for a couple of obscure indy films and was shocked that they had them. Even if I only rent five or six each month, it will be worth the money, eh?

19. Good selection, great if you love to watch movies |
|
I love the selection and ease of rental. We will usually receive the movies the next day. I've been a subscriber for over 3 years and only once have I received a faulty DVD. I've never had one not show up, either. The nice part is that you can always cancel and restart at any time - there's no contract or anything.

24. I joined b/c I'm notorious for taking movies back late.... |
|
I'm ALWAYS charged late fees at Blockbuster, etc, because I either forget or am too lazy to take them back on time. Since there are no late fees with Netflix, I save money in the long run.
I haven't had a movie disappear yet. And I get new movies pretty quick once I mail them back.
But I don't have cable and wouldn't suscribe otherwise. I think paying for one or the other is reasonable, but not both. JMHO.

|
Quick turn around. No more middle fo the night trips to Blockbuster to return a movie before the late fee. I love it.
I recently up'ed my subscription from 3 movies to 5 so I have two for the weekend and three to watch during the week.

We are extremely happy. We even upgraded to the $32 service, so we can have 5 films out at a time. That way our 12 year old gets two that are her choice.

28. Netflix is wonderful for those of us that like strange movies |
|
because they carry a lot of things that your local video store will never carry, and which will cause a look of great puzzlement to appear on the faces of the teenage clerks if you request them ("there is a pain between my ears"). For example, we just rented Roman Polanski's movie Knife in the Water from Netflix. Good luck finding that at Schlockbuster.

There's a distribution center in my city (Houston) so I usually get a 2-day turnaround.
Good selection of movies, but I'm especially fond of the documentaries & TV series. Currently working my way through "Dr Who"--the Tom Baker episodes, of course.

The library is cheaper and Movie Madness has far more selection. Besides, I can rent far more movies from MM for that money than I could from Netflix, the way their system works. And I don't lose out in the summer, when I don't watch movies. I know a lot of people who use it, but they all come out way behind compared to what they would spend at the local video store (in most places, great local venues can still be found). Besides...
Think Library and save all that cash for something more enjoyable.

It's true that during the months when you don't rent much you lose money on it, but I personally make that up in not paying late fees. The best thing about Netflix is that you have access to a selection much, much larger than your local Blockbusters can offer. Basically if you're looking for anything that came out more than 10 years ago or didn't play in a multiplex, Blockbusters cannot help you. Netflix has a lot of stuff you would never find in most video chains: documentaries, lesser-known "classic" films, cult favorites, international films, and so on and so forth. They're pretty fast, and I've only ever gotten one DVD that was unplayable.
C ya,
The Plaid Adder
