Confederate symbolism: Do you see more of this flag...

Than this one?

I live in NC, and I swear I see a lot of people moving away from the old "X" flag to the stars and bars flag.

Is this a slick way for rednecks to fly their flag w/o catching as much flak?

1. Yes. I believe so.
The 1st official Confederate flag is not very recognizable and they know it.

2. Maybe
They're a crafty bunch. But some of them will always stay "old school" confederacy.

3. They use the Stars and Bars as one of the 'six flags' over Texas
Edited on Wed Jun-16-04 12:55 PM by Richardo

It's a LOT less emotionally charged, and since it was in fact the national flag of the CSA; by far the most appropriate.

5. Thanks, I learn something new
every day here on DU. I knew there were six flags that flew over Texas since I'm a native Texan but I never realized this was one of them.

7. LOL! I was quizzed on that by my future father-in-law...
Edited on Wed Jun-16-04 01:06 PM by Richardo
...the first time I came down here with his daughter. (Good naturedly - he's a great guy)

Much to my Yankee chagrin, I named 5 out of 6: I blanked on the CSA. :eyes: Oops!

4. You only see the battle flag on bumpers in Texas
I wonder if a majority of Texans know the difference.

6. Isn't it kind of like putting lipstick on a pig?
Or using a pair of lightning bolts instead of a swastika?

8. My Pride
I dont see the old CSA flag anywhere. Maybe it is time for its resurrection. As for the "X" style flag I will still fly it with pride at my home. Its about Heritage not Hate. It troubles me how the CSA has been so villified. I would love to knock one of them skinheads upside the head with a crowbar everytime I see it used for such hateful means.

11. I never did like the "X" style flag.
Even before I understood what it stood for, I thought it was an ugly flag. I don't like and have never liked the way it looked.

See my post re: Texas above.

14. I don't buy that for a second...
If someone in Germany flies a swastika in front of their house, what does that say?

A heritage of racism.

If you were German would you fly the swastika? They were villified too, you know.

16. Some things just need to be allowed to die.
Especially so for the symbols of misguided or bad causes.

Segregation, anyone ? ( discounting White Supremicists )

19. What, you don't love your country?
Leaving the charge of racism out, you must hate the US if you are flying the CSA flag at your house. After all, it is one of the flags used by a group of TRAITORS who turned on there country in order to better oppress an entire race of people.

Sheesh, and they say leftists hate the US.:eyes:

9. The upper flag seems to be used by wealthier individuals...
Edited on Wed Jun-16-04 01:09 PM by TN al
... I have even seen the bonnie blue flag that carries a single star around here again in your upscale homes. I think all of them say "look at me I'm a racist" despite whatever lame excuse they use for flying them. Interesting historical note, the battle flag was dismissed by the confederacy for government use because, in the words of an official,"it looks like a pair of suspenders." rotate the flag 90 degrees and you will see what they meant. damn stupid red necks get off on flying their suspenders is what I think when i see the battle flag now.

on edit: did you get a freeper to stop trolling with your post. Bring up a subject close to home and they can't hold their tounges. Seems to me it is a heritage of hatred if you ask me.

17. The way I see it . . .
Either one of those flags is a sign of racism and bigotry.

Of course, we could allow the argument that it doesn't represent racism and bigotry, in which case it does represent TREASON.

18. That's a great point: If not racism, then outright TREASON...
I've never heard it put that way before. Good insight.

that seems to combine the stars & bars and the SC state flag that I've been seeing around here. I think it's those 21st century seccessionist. Bad stupid.

22. I more or less see that first one ...
flying over every public building in the State of Georgia. Our newest state flag is basically the old Confederate national flag with the Georgia Seal slapped into the blue field.

I think it's just a southern pride thing. I don't take it as a redneck or even a racist statement.
