Upgrading computer audio
I just bought a new computer (see HERE for details). I love everything about it, except the sound. The computer has integrated audio, but is 6-speaker configurable.

If I try to configure it for more speakers, will I have to buy a different sound card?

1. That depends on a lot of factors
Including how much power your computer puts out and if your speaker package includes an amp, and if so, what power does it put out at what impedence, and does it power a sub?

Moreover, the only thing the sound card should control is sound quality, assuming you have the power and impedence right. buy your speakers together and they'll be correct. Do you want surround, because that will require a decent sound card (maybe an upgrade if your card is too basic) as well.

2. I don't need surround
but what I have now is just terrible. I even tried using the "equalizer" on my computer, but it really doesn't help much. Very tinny sounding. I tried connecting my speakers from my old computer (which sounded pretty good) to this one, and it made no difference at all--still very tinny.

3. yeah a new sound card sounds like a place to start
your connector on your computer or some of the wiring may also be bad. But start with a premium sound card of some sort. You will have to pay for a good one. My experience with electronics: most often you pay for what you get, so do some research if you can.

5. bad wiring?
It's BRAND NEW!!!

(Or did you mean it's possible I didn't connect it correctly?)

I'm not looking for the best sound in the world. I sold my stereo not long ago, because I never used it. It was just easier to use the CD player on my computer, and it sounded about the same anyway.

But now w/ the new computer this isn't the case.

6. what are the main specs on the comp
and what brand. if you got an emachine or some other piece, it wouldn't suprise me at all if the wiring was bad.

4. Few Mainboards have acceptable Integrated Audio
Switching to a "real" soundcard should improve your Sound Quality (and allow for 7.1 Speakers).
Generally the SoundBlaster (Audigy) cards are regarded as being good, but they can be quite expensive.
