Truck hauling bees crashes in Montana
Dumps honey, sending bees on rampage
Wednesday, June 16, 2004 Posted: 11:08 AM EDT (1508 GMT)

BOZEMAN, Montana (AP) -- A tractor-trailer overturned on a curve on a highway, spilling its load of hundreds of bee hives and unleashing some nine million angry honey bees.

The bees buzzed furiously as driver Lane Miller, his arm scraped to the bone, struggled to flee his rig after it overturned Monday in Bear Trap Canyon west of Bozeman. The truck slid across the highway before coming to a stop between guardrails.

"I had to kick the windshield out of the front of the cab and the bees were on me from that moment," said Miller, 41. "I've never felt so much fear in my life."

4. And very painful.
It's a good thing he wasn't allergic or he would no longer be here. He probably took the curve too fast - very high, or no speed limit on those Montana highways.

6. And after the bees, come...
<snip> State Transportation Department employees dropped sand on the road to soak up the sticky mess.</userdefined>

So the next problem will be a mess of bears out there sucking sweet sand off the highway! That ought to make a postcard or two!

"Welcome to Montana! Come, celebrate the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial! and remember, don't feed the bears!"

10. At least BearTrap where the highway runs through it is pretty low
I would think that, during the summer, the bears'd be so high up in the hills that none would even be close enough to the highway to smell it, anyway.

It's all scrub and Pronghorn Country there by the highway, if I recall correctly.

Did you ever eat pronghorn? Usually I LOVE venison, but I had a buddy in Cardwell who shot one and gave me some.

Yeccch! So dry and flavorless, I thought I was eating ground-up Tofu.

And like Tofu, I had to add Beef Grease to it to make it edible.

5. the bigger issue here
is that we've fucked up the environment so badly that there are no wild bees left to pollinate anything.

there was a paper published in nature (the magazine) not so long ago that put a $ figure on services that mother nature provides for free (provided we let her). in other words, what would it cost to supply the same services she does (such as pollinating crops, replenishing the oxygen supply, providing fresh water, etc etc).

turned out to be about $33 trillion / year, or roughly equivalent to the entire economic output of the planet. so, as we have to pay for more and more of these services, expect the quality of life to spiral downwards.
