I finally saw "Super Size Me".
Edited on Wed Jun-16-04 06:44 PM by northwest
I only was eating McDonald's on rare occasions (once every 6 weeks to 2 months or so) before I saw the film, but now I'm completely OFF McDonald's and Burger King, but not fast food entirely. I still have a soft spot for Arby's, Boston Market and Taco Johns.:) I only eat it once a week anyway.

But anyway, that film kinda freaked me out. Especially with the trips he made to McDonalds' in Texas. They all asked him to Super Size his meal. It was also really creepy seeing his health deteriorate after the 30 days.

1. Didn't He Eat
McDonalds for breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday? What did he expect to happen? It's all in moderation, I say. I can't give up the occasional McDonald's cheeseburger.

2. Well, I'm even sick of Mccy D's myself...
I used to have a soft spot for their bacon egg and cheez biscuits for breakfast. I went there for a strawberrry shake about 2 weeks ago.

My vices lie in Arby's, Boston Market, Taco John's and Wendy's.;)

14. I wouldn't put Boston Market in the same category. You can get food fast
there, but you can eat a decent meal with a relatively low grease quotient, and real vegetables too.

4. Exactly...
if you eat fast food ONLY for all meals of course it's going to affect your health.

once in a while shouldn't hurt you, but all the time? of course.

3. I like the idea of a place called "Taco John's"
The name just screams, "not remotely Mexican!"

13. There's a place around here called "Nicky's Chinese Food"
Now, I know a lot of Chinese nationals, and not a one is named "Nicholas," "Nick," "Nikolov" or "Nicky."

6. Fantastic film!
Makes you realize (if you haven't before) just how sinister the fast food industry is.

9. Actually, you can eat at MacDonalds without ruining your health
IF you only eat one meal per day.

12. In fairness to McD's I think Spurlock's experiment was on the extreme
Edited on Wed Jun-16-04 08:50 PM by Mayberry Machiavelli
side. He didn't just eat his meals there, he always got the big ass shake, got TWO cheeboiger instead of one, etc. In other words, if he had say a "regular" Big Mac meal with diet soda for lunch every day and the same for dinner, with no shake/ice cream, he could have had something resembling a normal caloric intake, and maybe would have put on 5-10 lbs instead of 25, and his liver wouldn't have been screaming for mercy. His caloric intake was about double the normal requirements for a guy his size.

I understand the principle of making an experiment's conditions more extreme in order to show a result, but he really really pushed the calories. Even his dietician consultant told him to lay off the shakes but he wouldn't do it.

For those who haven't seen it, the McD's for a Month stunt is really just a narrative thread to provide structure for the rest of the movie, which is a Michael Moore genre documentary about obesity in America. One major difference is that there's no way Michael Moore would have taken no for an answer when the McD's corporate suits stonewalled him on an interview. MM would have ambushed them or something for sure.

I did enjoy the movie and recommend it even if Spurlock was a bit histrionic. He's pretty gifted and I will look out for future stuff from him. Very nice use of graphics and music. The paintings by the "artistic genius" (what was his name again?) were awesome, I must have one... (Impressionistic depictions of Ronald McDonald and Walmarts and KFCs, too awesome)
