6. Satellite... Directv (Tried Dish Network First... HORRIBLE...) |
|
... they had a "SCREEN SAVER" with a bouncing DishNetwork logo that would kick in if you didn't change the channels often enough. Stupid! (Esecially if you used a VCR or DVR for unattended recording.)
Their receiver also had to "connect" at a certain time to retrieve all the programming guide info... instead of just trickling it in throughout the day as Directv does.
I'm lovin' satellite MUCH better than cable. You know those Comcast commercials that try to scare you by exaggerating the "problems" of satellite dishes. LIES!! The reception is better than cable!! BETTER!!
:-) Sorry Comcast... at least you're still my internet provider.

7. Your "problems" were simple to fix (with DISH) |
|
The "Screen Saver" could have disabled in the system menu. Default is to shut down if inactive for a certain length of time.
And your programming guide problem could have been fixed by simply removing your Smart Card, then putting it back in. I can program shows for PVR recording over a week in advance with no probs....
We've had Dish since almost day one (when it cost over $1,000 to have it installed...the good ole' days). The one thing we miss is being able to watch east and west coast network feeds. It was great with our crazy schedule. Now we're forced to watch local networks. We only get east and west coast FAUX Network now, which we won't watch.

10. I also lurked and participated at a couple of sat-dish discussion forums |
|
and picked some brains on the issue. I really didn't want to have to un-do everything and start over from scratch. I really wanted it to work.
Even the fellows at the Dish network tech support (email and phone) admitted that it was an onging problem that they were working to find a solution on. But not timetable or estimate was available.
I even set change-channel reminders at oddball times to avoid the screen saver, but that only worked half the time. I had at least a dozen or more unattended records on my ReplayTV give me nothing but hours and hours of that damn bouncing logo. LOL (I laugh now... but it wasn't funny then.)

I'm glad you're not having trouble. It was maddening.

Too bad you couldn't get it to work. Dish just add Sirius Radio, which is nice. You should have upgraded to the 501 or higher. Oh well, at least you have Direct TV. Cable just plain sucks. People don't realize that every "connector" they install between neighbors degrades the signal.

20. Yep... I was DELIGHTED with the Dish Network Quality... |
|
it was just a programming bug in the receiver I got for "free".
On the plus side. They didn't give me a hard time about canceling. I got a 100% refund. They sent me (via UPS) empty boxes and postage paid labels to return the units back to them.
Irreconcilable differences. It was an amicable divorce, we parted friends. :-)

9. My family were cable pioneers. |
|
Edited on Wed Jun-16-04 09:41 PM by Armstead
I grew up in a place that was beyond the reach of TV signals because of the mountains (even though it's only 35 miles from the nearest cities).
So back in the days of black-and-white TV in the early 1960's we got a cable hook up.
We went from 0 stations to 13 overnight.

11. Heh- heh! My dad used to work for Clearview Cablevision In Valdosta, GA |
|
back in the late 60's. We were one of the first to have cable in our neighborhood. We went from 3 fuzzy stations to 13... with a TIME AND TEMPERATURE station that had a camera which would pan left to right back and forth along a line of 12" clocks, and various other weather meters.
It was so cool!

14. The Beauty Of ReplayTV Digital Video Recording |
|
Edited on Wed Jun-16-04 10:12 PM by arwalden
Record JUST the shows you want. Record and ENTIRE night of "Must See TV NBC Thursday" (4 hours)... then watch it at your leisure on Friday. Skipping EVERY commercial and condensing 4 hours of recorded TV into just over 3 hours of watching time.
Meanwhile, as you're watching your Thursday Night shows, it's recording whatever you wanted to record on Friday. No time is wasted. No commercials. (The only sacrifice is watching stuff a day later.)
That's a small sacrifice to make. Except for local news, I watch that live.
-- Allen
And the weather channel... I watch that live whenever a storm's coming.

22. I disliked Comcast because they have so many ads for Comcast... |
|
It appears that if any slots in their block of "local ads" is unsold, then Comcast will run SELF PROMOTION commercials.
HEY! I've ALREADY got comcast... quit trying to sell it to me!
I know they are only trying to get the "basic" subscribers to upgrade to digital or to get HBO/Showtime/Cinemax/Starz, but it does get tiring. (Almost as tiring as Haliburton commercials and Ditech commercials... but not quite.)
