Occasionally, I wonder over to the evil site to browse. Tonight I saw something so bizarre that I had to tell you all about it. Here is a freeper who wants to buy his child a CD/Tape player but wants desperately to disable the radio to protect her from the big evil world of commercial radio!!! This guy is insane. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1157054/posts

must go through. If this guy is concerned about commercial radio, what other limitations does he place on these kids? They're going to be total outcasts. They will have no idea what is going on in the world around them when they finally are able to break free.

3. Get one without a radio! |

Ten minutes at the local Wal-Mart should turn up two or three tape players without built-in radios.
Can they really be that dumb?

My favorite post so far:
To: mlmr
If you're planning to send this unit to a jail/prison inmate, the facility will probably give you a hard time about it even if you do disable the radio portion. Best to purchase a cassette and/or CD player only with no radio.

6. If he had said the LAME world of commercial radio, I might concede... |
|

...that he had a point.
Does that guy really think his kid won't hear what's on the radio simply because she doesn't own one herself? Surely, the kid's friends have radios! Of course, it's entirely possible that the concept of having friends is alien to Freeper Dad.
One last point: As a teen-ager, I listened to the radio constantly. I often heard songs like "Sexual Healing," "Walk On The Wild Side," "She Bop," and "I Want Your Sex," to name but a few. And I think I turned out pretty well!
Well OK, that's open to debate, but I think I've made my point! ;)

"It is for my daughter and we do not permit unmonitered broadcast radio or cable into our home."
Granted, the allowed broadcasts are probably Rush and Boortz, but the overall concept is solid. Media is pollution.

"Turn on the radio. Set the dial to a frequency that has no radio. Then go in and cut the dial volume control cord so you can't reset the dial to a radio station frequency."
C'mooooon, Darwin!! :D
Nononono! Unplug the radio tuner deal from yer wall. Disconnect the wire thingies. Attach one to yer scrotum and one to yer earlobe. Plug 'er back in. Dunno if it'll solve yer ra-diddio problem but it makes a great Christmas card picture!

I proudly present...the tinfoil palace!!
"To: mlmr Since the cassette/CD player is going into her room, the best approach may be to exclude radio waves from her room altogether. The principle of the "Faraday cage" is used to construct lab rooms where sensitive electrical experiments and electronic design work can be undertaken, unimpeded by interference from outside radio waves.
Either fine mesh copper or copper foil should be used to cover the walls, ceiling and floors. I think foil is preferred, but fine mesh screen may be used on windows if a view of the outdoors is wanted. The joints in the foil should be lapped and soldered, including the floor to wall and wall to ceiling joints. Special care should be taken with the doors. Install copper flashing on the door edge and copper weatherstripping on the jamb. The door edges should be solderd to the foil on the face of the door and the door face should be connected at the hinge to the wall by using flexible copper braid. Copper braids should also be liberally applied to various points in the room and connected by heavy copper braid to water pipes or a good ground rod.
Good luck.

I found an inexpensive tabletop cassette player, cd player for my daughter's birthday. I want to disable the radio. How can I have this done. The man in the store told me that he could not get into the box to do it. How to I find a good player without a radio?? Like clocks they seem to be installed on everything.
"Inexpensive" for his daughter's birthday. Nice. How much you wanna bet this guy has spent tons of money on his own computer equiptment for himself.

I absolutely have no sympathy for these overcontrolling fools who think that the best way to raise their kids is to lock them in a metaphorical bomb shelter and pretend that they'll never have to build a life for themselves in the world outside. It's irresponsible parenting at its most extreme.

I read the whole thread and I'm amazed! I even checked this persons profile out and it turns out it's a she. No television and no radio?
I wonder how old the poor child is. I also wonder how old the oldest child is as the freeper says there is an older child she did this to who is just fine.
Even the freepers thinks she's a bit loony. That poor deluded woman is in for a big surprise. All of her children will go through the rebellious stage and because of her restrictions, they'll rebel in a major way. What will she do then? Will we one day read an article about a woman who tied her kids up and padlocked them into a closet?

28. They'd better make sure that kid doesn't have a library card! |
|
She might read unmonitored literature and get...GASP!...new ideas!
Truly, this kind of wrapping kids in cotton wool is counterproductive. To start with, it doesn't work unless the kid is hermetically sealed inside their room, and second, you've just more or less guaranteed that your kid will be regarded as a complete and total freak. A better approach, if you're concerned about what your child might see/hear/read, is to TALK to them about it, and explain your concerns. That's what my husband did when we busted his boys - then 9 and 12 - viewing internet porn (they happened on it accidentally and were grossed out but also kind of intrigued - but mostly they were confused by it). He explained that basically, there's a lot of people out there in the world, some of them have varying degrees of psychological issues, and everyone seems to have a website. He told them he wasn't going to limit what they could surf, but he wanted their assurance that they'd talk to him about what they found that was peculiar, or disturbing. He mostly wanted to keep them away from shit like the Heaven's Gate cult, but he also didn't want them exposed to some people's fetishes without a buffer.
Censorship doesn't work. Communication does.
