how's this for a setlist/repertoire |
|
I'm going to attempt to gig a little this winter, and am making a list of songs i know well enough to perform without too much "rehearsal". These are what i've got in my bag that i can remember, i'm sure there are quite a few that i know that have slipped my mind, and i didn't include those that wouldn't fit the obvious slant like ozzy, eagles, etc..
little wing old love sunshine of your love black magic woman evil ways lenny (srv instrumental)
soulshine all along watchtower hey joe tore down nobody knows you when you're down and out wind cries mary simple man
scuttle buttin mustang sally thrill is gone redhouse blue on black (kenny "ripoff" wayne shepard" voodoo child while my guitar gently weeps house of rising sun seeing things
I'd like to add a few and am considering..
tightrope (srv)
stormy monday white room castles made of sand more santana stuff, (europa, oye como va)
thoughts? suggestions?

2. Robin Trower - Too Rolling Stoned |
|
The solo at the end is awesome!
I used to love playing that (I play bass). Of course, guitarist that can do it justice aren't easy to come by. If you're playing SRV and Hendrix you shouldn't have any problem.
Sounds like a great set list.

Day of the Eagle is more high powered. We used to play that and the place would go crazy.

5. i'll have to check it out. |
|
if it's an instrumental it may be tough for me since i am horrible at note-for note stuff. i tend to get the general idea and go from there.

8. Its not an instrumental... |
|
and its better if you put your own spin on it. There's a few key riffs that should be in there.
I think Too Rolling Stoned needs a Wah Wah pedal, too.
Are you in the LA area?

I've been away from playing for close to two years, and am just now getting some of my chops back. it's tough to work your way back up, rebuilding callouses and all that stuff..

11. I'm in LA and wanted to come hear you play. |
|
I've been away from playing for about 10 years, but now I'm working back in.
I love playing live. Its one of those special pleasures in life that you can't understand unless you do it, and not just anyone can do it (without investing the time and practice).
Let us know how the first gig goes!
:toast:
p.s. If you're not familiar with Robin Trower, check him out. He was one of those late 60's early 70's blues rock guitar dudes. I saw him live in Hollywood in 1990. His Marshall was 10 feet from my head. It was great.

12. i'm familiar with him actually |
|
just not anything in particular. I'd have to say that he never really did it for me as a player and i never really latched on to what i heard.
I've played on stage many times, but always as a sit-in or something along those lines. i work at a shop and have taught guitar for a few years, and i got burnt on trying to get people to practice etc.. so i kind of left the scene, and now i'm back surrounded by people that are gigging all the time and want to get a piece of it myself.

Its hard to keep bands together. They remind of 3, 4, or 5 way marriages. All those creative people are hard to keep on task.

Just slow it down and don't shout.

13. You may want to check out the clubs you plan to play |
|
(if you haven't yet), to help gauge if your setlist will go over well at them. It's really disheartening to play to a venue that is not geared toward the music you play.
One time in the 80's when we were playing heavier rock and reggae covers, my drummer and I pulled up to a club with some of our equipment. We decided to check the room out before we unloaded. We went through the saloon doors and were met with a bright and shiny sea of cowboy hats, big belt buckles, and rhinestones. We actually turned and looked at each other and went AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaa! like the kid in the movie "Home Alone".
By the time the band set up, the crowd had gone. They didn't like the way we looked. There were 3 people in the audience at the end of the night, and I think they were club staff. And actually our band was fully capable of pulling off a night of 50's rock, country, and country rock pretty well.
I'm gigging in Mexico right now and last night we played 2 of the Santana tunes you have on your list. Santana is universally popular down here.

14. these are songs i've played around with others |
|
I've been to enough clubs around here and know this is a good starting point. I really only plan on hitting the blues joints anyway so i'm not too worried about it. st. louis has tons of places that will fit right in with a setlist similar to what i've got down here. i'm a very versatile player and can cover anything as long as i have a chart in front of me.

16. assuming you have (or are) a good blues guitarist . . . |
|
try a version of "Rainin' In My Heart" with a long, gut-tugging guitar solo . . . a la the Radio Kings on this CD . . . Live at B.B. King's http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000003AB3/qid=1087800457/sr=ka-3/ref=pd_ka_3/104-4515073-0090306actually, you do well to pick up this CD (it's cheap; supplies are limited) for some other excellent ideas . . .
