29. LOL
The Gnome
(Barrett) 2:13

I want to tell you a story
About a little man
If I can.
A gnome named Grimble Crumble.
And little gnomes stay in their homes.
Eating, sleeping, drinking their wine.

He wore a scarlet tunic,
A blue green hood,
It looked quite good.
He had a big adventure
Amidst the grass
Fresh air at last.
Wining, dining, biding his time.
And then one day - hooray!
Another way for gnomes to say
Oooooooooomray.

Look at the sky, look at the river
Isn't it good?
Look at the sky, look at the river
Isn't it good?
Winding, finding places to go.
And then one day - hooray!
Another way for gnomes to say
Oooooooooomray.
Ooooooooooooooomray.

4. Free Four
The memories of a man in his old age
Are the deeds of a man in his prime.
You shuffle in gloom of the sickroom
And talk to yourself as you die.

Life is a short, warm moment
And death is a long cold rest.
You get your chance to try in the twinkling of an eye:
Eighty years, with luck, or even less.

So all aboard for the American tour,
And maybe you'll make it to the top.
And mind how you go, and I can tell you, 'cause I know
You may find it hard to get off.

You are the angel of death
And I am the dead man's son.
And he was buried like a mole in a fox hole.
And everyone is still in the run.

And who is the master of fox hounds?
And who says the hunt has begun?
And who calls the tune in the courtroom?
And who beats the funeral drum?

The memories of a man in his old age
Are the deeds of a man in his prime.
You shuffle in gloom in the sickroom
And talk to yourself till you die.

39. Oh, Understood...
It's cool you got to see the show you did! Thats when it was a bit different from the final album. The Atom Heart Mother show breifly featured Pink Floyd cooking on stage during "Breakfast". I've read something about "Flying hash browns" and food being thrown all over the stage.

As for Barkley, nope, just his beard.

16. How to define underrated?
If they're in your poll, at least *you're* giving them the credit they deserve! So I'm gonna have to go with "Matilda Mother," just because nobody else has mentioned it yet...

I'm in a band that used to cover "Astronomy Domine," and there's a groundswell of public opinion (two out of three band members) that we should start playing it again.

17. By underrated, I mean:
1. Ones you don't hear regularly on the radio
2. Nothing off of the Big Three (Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, The Wall)
3. Songs that the casual music listener would not recognize.
4. My personal favorites (I couldn't very well list every Floyd track in my poll).

20. Not Voivod
I do like their version-- but then on their next record they did "Nile Song," and I thought it was cheesy, so I stopped buying their records.

"Echoes" was more or less the song that hooked me on Pink Floyd (it had something to do with doing a lot of bong hits and listening to it while watching "Creature from the Black Lagoon" on late night TV-- those were the days) so I have some difficulty thinking of it as underrated. Of course back then The Wall wasn't even a glaze in Roger Waters' eye.

But most of the songs in your poll are favorites of mine. Except I would happily forego ever hearing "Atom Heart Mother" again, especially if I could get more Syd Barrett-era singles in exchange.

25. THIS is a hard question.

For me, it can't be one because there is more than one Floyd.

Best Underrated "Barrett-Floyd" song: Bike.
I don't consider A.D. or Interstellar Overdrive as underrated. Everything off of "Piper" is outstanding, but I think Bike pretty much sums up what was about to happen with Barrett, at the same time is a great song with a psychedelic hook at the end. Jugband Blues is fun, but sad especially the Barrett Lyric "And I'm wondering who could be writing this song."

Best Underrated "The Pink Floyd" song: To me, this covers the albums between Piper and Dark Side. Best Underrated Song: Fearless.
I'm taking into consideration "underrated" here. I don't think Echos or One of These Days (Nick Mason's solo vocal) are underrated. Fearless has a great melody and Water's lyrics are starting to come together.

Best Underrated "FLOYD" song: This is the hardest, because they are all great albums. Dark Side, Animals, Wish You Were Here, The Wall, The Final Cut. Again, since we're talking about underrated here, South Hampton Dock/The Final Cut is my choice. Waters lyrics don't get more chilling or more personal. Gilmore's solo is just as good as anything on The Wall.

Best Underrated "Pink Floyd 2" song: Marooned. A great instrumental that really gets back to Pink Floyd's roots.

The link will take you to a Quicktime site that has the long video for the album. The songs on the video are:

The Gunner's Dream

Not Now John ("Stuff all that" version)
The Fletcher Memorial Home

They also have a video for "When The Tigers Broke Free" but it's just cuts from the movie.

26. Gunners Dream

From Pink Floyd The Final Cut
lyrics Roger Waters

floating down through the clouds
memories come rushing up to meet me now
in the space between the heavens
and in the corner of some foreign field
i had a dream
i had a dream

goodbye max
goodbye ma
after the service when you're walking slowly to the car
and the silver in her hair shines in the cold november air
you hear the tolling bell
and touch the silk in your lapel
and as the tear drops rise to meet the comfort of the band
you take her frail hand
and hold on to the dream

A place to stay
enough to eat
somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street
where you can speak out loud
about your doubts and fears
and what's more no-one ever disappears
you never hear their standard issue kicking in your door

you can relax on both sides of the tracks
and maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control
and everyone has recourse to the law
and no-one kills the children anymore
and no-one kills the children anymore

night after night
going round and round my brain
his dream is driving me insane

In the corner of some foreign field
the gunner sleeps tonight
what's done is done
we cannot just write off his final scene
take heed of the dream
take heed

33. Well Waters is a brilliant lyricist
and his brilliance shines on The Final Cut

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
a requiem for the post war dream
by roger waters
In 1983, Roger Waters published a poetic
perspective of British politics dating back to
the second World War. This poetry is found in the
lyrics of Pink Floyd's 1983 album "The Final Cut".
The lyrics include biting commentary on British
politics during the office of Prime Minister
Margaret Thatcher as well as chilling perspectives
on the unseen events of World War II.
Roger Waters focuses on the details of the human
experience and illustrates how far removed the
common man is from the political machine that
determines so much of his destiny. He gives the
soldier and name, a face, a family. He reminds us
that no man is expendable. Critical of war,
Waters questions motives and the price of victory.
He leaves the question to us, "what is it that we
fight for?"
This body of work is a reminder of a terrible
war and of the soldiers that died fighting. It is
a realization of innocence lost. This is the
poetry that is Water's requiem for the post war
dream.

31. the final cut
the final cut

through the fish eyed lens of tear stained eyes
i can barely define the shape of this moment in time
and far from flying high in clear blue skies
i'm spiralling down to the hole in the ground where I hide

if you negotiate the minefields in the drive
and beat the dogs and cheat the cold electronic eyes
and if you make it past the shotgun in the hall
dial the combination open the priesthole
and if i'm in i'll tell you what's behind the wall

there's a kid who had a big hallucination
making love to girls in magazines
he wonders if you're sleeping with your new found faith
could anybody love him
or is it just a crazy dream

and if i show you my dark side
will you still hold me tonight
and if i open my heart to you
and show you my weak side
what would you do
would you sell your story to rolling stone
would you take the children away
and leave me all alone
and smile in reassurance
as you whisper down the phone
would you send me packing
or would you take me home

thought i oughta bare my naked feelings
thought i oughta tear the curtain down
i held the blade in trembling hands
prepared to make it but just then the phone rang
i never had the nerve to make the final cut

A great tribute album, with many classic and obscure Floyd tunes done in new and imaginative ways. My particular favorites are Mike Keneally's take on "Astronomy Domine", and the pop-punk version of "Time", plus "5 Minute Version of The Wall".
