The 100 Greatest British albums/Observer Music Monthly |
|
As you might expect, there's the obligatory Beatles/Stones orgy...but what a shocker (in the very best way! :D) #1 is! :wow: :bounce: :toast: Enjoy! :hi: http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/0,12103,1033618,00.html

1. Iconoclasm for its own sake |
|
I am reminded of a book that came out around fifteen years ago. It proposed that the greatest r&r album ever was Rod Stewart's _Every Picture Tells a Story_. That's a great album, but to suggest that it's the greatest is goofy and smells of publicity-grabbing.
_Spin_ picked _James Brown: Live at the Apollo_ as the Greatest Ever in the late eighties (at about the same time that _Rolling Stone_ was giving us the usual suspects).
And didn't NME (was it NME?) choose Bowie as the greatest r&r performer ever?

that those twats ABC were better than Pink Floyd...or that there are 62 better albums than "Dark Side of the Moon."
For that matter, note that Van Morrison and Elvis Costello have but one album apiece on the list...and that Dexy's Midnight Runners (which had but ONE decent SONG in their whole useless career) have TWO.

3. Insanity. Not one XTC album listed. |
|
The only band more British than XTC were the Kinks, yet not one mention.
Really bad list.

And Grand Prix by Teenage Fanclub is? It's not even their best record.

16. A Catholic Education kicks Grand Prix across the room and back |
|
2 LPs by Nick Drake - hey, he is great, but they never paid attention to him when he was alive and wouldn't have without the tragic ackground (and the VW commercial). One by Costello - insane.
Where is Graham Parker? No Yardbirds?

6. Stone Roses over London Calling? |
|
Lord, and I thought I'd seen the most of absurd of these lists.
Much as I love ol' Man city, no amount of civic pride could ever convince me Stone Roses was a better record than London Calling.
And how is the first Smiths record better than The Queen is Dead.
Lists are so silly. Damn you, D!

I, for one, am thrilled. :P
(Yes, lists are silly, and I'd wager if the #1 had been different I wouldn't have posted this one. ;))

I'm so sure that(What's The Story) Morning Glory by Oasis is better than Quadrophenia.
And at least eight of the top 100 have to be Elvis Costello albums for the thing to have a scrap of credibility.
Just foolishness....

How does "Dexy's Midnight Runners" beat The Who's Quadrophenia? In fact... why is there only one Who album on the whole damn list? Even a Soul-to-Soul compilation album beat the The Who... WTF is up with that?

They meant to tell me that three Stones Albums and five Beatles albums are better than all the Who albums, including Who's Next, Tommy, and Qudraphenia?
To add insult to injury, they have not one, not two, but THREE albums by Roxy Music that are better than The Who or Zep? Not to mention that Echo and the Bunnymen are listed before the The Who or Zep?
This list sucks.
